That was fast. First Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. (the “Tropic Thunder” buddies) apparently turn down the offer to host the offer and now the official hosts have been named (press release via these Awards obsessives).
We just mentioned Steve Martin as a possible rumored host just a few hours ago with a “30 Rock” actor in tow (Tina Fey) and while they didn’t take the former SNL news gal, they did take “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin, who’s more than proved his comedic chops on that show.
A guy and a gal would have been better than two males frankly (a threesome with Tina Fey?), but we suppose we can’t complain about this. There is after all 10 Best Picture nominees, so perhaps it takes two hosts to handle all the additional weight.
Now here’s something we (I) always puzzle over. It’s the 2009 Oscars, because it’s the films from ’09, but it’s always called the year before Oscars 2010) because that’s the year it takes place? We always want to call them the 2009 Oscars, but nitpickers always get their panties in a twist about the verbiage.
Both actors, Baldwin and Martin star in “It’s Complicated” with Meryl Streep that comes out later this year? When? Not sure, we’ll have to ask our 50-year-old aunt about it. She surely has that release date on her non-ironic cute cat calendar.
Update: Apparently those rumors were on the money, an Oscar show hosted by Steve Martin and Tina Fey almost happened. “It wasn’t that she turned us down but her work schedule right in that time, she’s writing the last of her shows, and we realized then that it wouldn’t work,” Director/choreographer Adam Shankman, one of the co-producers of this year’s Oscars told EW.
To the extent I care, thank Christ it's not Crystal. Seriously. Am I the only one who thinks he sucks?
Wow…looks like I care more than I thought.
The oscars are fun, but shallow. If you go into them with that understanding, it's ok (i wish the Awards blogs would at least SAY they recognize it).
But yes, Crystal is the mf'ing worst.
Steve Martin had one of the best gags last year, the whole "I am a writer" thing when presenting the award for best screenplay. Now Baldwin on the other hand…I think they can do better.
