Got a Tip?

Jon Favreau’s Reveals When His ‘Star Wars’ TV Series Takes Place

Jon Favreau is deep into production on his “live-action” (aka full-on CGI) “Lion King” remake for Disney right now, but last night, everyone was talking about another project the filmmaker has coming. At the premiere for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (which people are actually digging), Nerdist caught up with the “Iron Man” director and asked him for details on his upcoming live-action “Star Wars” TV series.

When asked about the time period for the new series, Favreau said that the show would take place seven years after the famed Battle of Endor (‘Return of the Jedi’). That timeline puts the series squarely in the untold space between ‘Jedi’ and ‘The Force Awakens.’ Also, the filmmaker confirmed that the series will feature all-new characters and use the same tech that was implemented in his acclaimed “The Jungle Book” remake. So, definitely expect some awesome mo-cap alien action.

The “Star Wars” TV series will be one of the crown jewels of the upcoming Disney streaming service. There’s still no word on a release date, which is obvious considering Disney hasn’t even announced a name or launch date for their streaming platform. However, the “Star Wars” series is expected no earlier than the latter part of 2019.

The untitled “Star Wars” streaming series is one of many projects that Lucasfilm has percolating about the galaxy far, far away. In addition to Favreau’s project, there’s a new trilogy from Rian Johnson, films by the “Game of Thrones” creators, a new cartoon series from Dave Filoni, as well as the finale of the new trilogy directed by J.J. Abrams. There have also been rumors that the long-in-development “Obi-Wan” solo film will go into production in Spring 2019.

For those hoping for something more immediate, ‘Solo’ hits theaters May 25.
