Dating back for years, every “Star Wars” animated series seems to forgo the option of telling a story in “contemporary” times in favor of filling in gaps in the history of the galaxy far, far away. And when “Star Wars Resistance” debuted in 2018, fans assumed that the same thing would happen with it, as the story seemed firmly positioned before the events of ‘The Force Awakens.’ However, with the latest trailer for the series, we find out that ‘Resistance’ might be a “Star Wars” series interested in telling present-day stories.
The new trailer for ‘Resistance’ is meant to promote the beginning of the second half of Season 1, which debuts in a week. And judging by one of the major scenes in the trailer, the end of Season 1 seems to line up pretty well with the events of ‘The Force Awakens,’ meaning the future of the animated series seems to be firmly stuck in the “present-day” of the “Star Wars” canon.
There are two scenes that hint at this being the case. The first is a scene featuring a video feed from the famous General Hux speech given in ‘The Force Awakens,’ which ends with the Starkiller base debuting its planet-destroying energy weapon. There’s another scene in the trailer, which shows Poe Dameron and the hero of ‘Resistance,’ Kaz Xiono, flying through a destroyed planetary system that seems to be a testing ground for the Starkiller base’s weapon.

The second half of the first season has a synopsis that lines up with exactly what we’ve surmised: “The First Order has arrived, and it’s up to Kaz to rally his friends to defend the Colossus.”
We’ll have to wait and see just how much of the second half of Season 1 ties into “The Force Awakens” when “Star Wars Resistance” returns January 13. The series has already been picked up for a Season 2, and depending on where we leave off Season 1, we could be looking at a “Star Wars” series that actually lines up fairly closely with the current timeline. Should be interesting.
