Despite being featured in a galaxy far, far away, the seemingly never-ending “Star Wars” universe of characters has been populated with all sorts of characters. However, there has yet to be an openly gay couple in the franchise. Well, thanks to the animated “Star Wars: Resistance,” that seems to be changing.
Speaking to the Coffee with Kenobi podcast, Executive Producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman, along with several actors from the series spoke about “Star Wars: Resistance” and what people might expect with Season 2. However, the conversation kicked off with the clearing up of a situation that wasn’t made explicitly clear in the first batch of episodes.

The interviewer asked the ‘Resistance’ folks if they would confirm that the two characters, Flix and Orka, are in fact in a relationship with each other. The end of the first season saw the characters going off together, but the implication was that maybe there is more to their relationship than something purely platonic. According to the interview, that’s exactly the case.
One of the folks chimed in and said, “I think it’s fair to say that they’re an item. They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that.”
Obviously, two alien characters (voiced by Jim Rash and Bobby Moynihan), in relatively minor roles, on a Disney animated series isn’t the same level of representation as two characters in one of the films, but this is clearly a big step for inclusivity in the “Star Wars” universe. Perhaps, this sort of change will prompt more characters to be revealed in the upcoming films that are being produced. Hey, who knows, perhaps we’ll even get confirmation that one of the major characters in the new trilogy is a member of the LGBTQ+ community?
We’ll have to see how the relationship gets explored in the new season of ‘Resistance,’ which premieres on October 6.
