Got a Tip?

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Scoring Lower With Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes

All year long, film culture has been paying way too much attention to Rotten Tomatoes scores. In the end, any site that leads to a reduction of a film to binary terms such as Fresh and Rotten, is adding nothing to the conversation around movies. At best, it’s a guide, helping audiences to see what the general critical response to a picture might be. Yet, in an era where Twitter arguments demand that you choose a side, Rotten Tomatoes is just one arsenal in the hands of people looking to defend or critique a picture.

This a long way of saying that the Rotten Tomatoes score for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi (as of the time of publication) for critics has landed at 93%, with the audience score way down at 58%. Uh oh! What does this mean?? Well, of the many people who saw the movie last night, and the fraction of those who decided to log their score on Rotten Tomatoes, nearly half didn’t like the movie. And/or, a bunch of people are just trolling Rotten Tomatoes. Or maybe those who didn’t like the movie voiced their discontent more loudly online than those who liked it. Who knows?

But here’s the good thing: you can still enjoy or anticipate a movie, even if the Rotten Tomatoes score doesn’t sync with your taste! I’m sure Disney might be looking at the score, but in the end, the company will probably sleep just fine as nearly a half billion dollars roll into the box office for ‘The Last Jedi’ this weekend. That said, audience scores for blockbusters usually aren’t this low.

For what it’s worth, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” audience scores were lower than critics (93% versus 88%), while it was higher for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (84% versus 87%). And then there’s “Justice League“, which landed at 40% for critics and 80% for audiences. Clearly, numbers mean nothing.

  1. What the fuck is “Rotten Tomatoes” ?
Aw gosh, ya – just kidding. But – Who in the hell would go there before seeing a movie ? Haven’t looked at that site once. Ever. Name says it all
Would be similar to coming to this site for an opinion if you were looking to watch a Marvel series on Netflix…

    • The movie is kind of a mess. It has some of the best moments of the series, definitely, but there’s a disconnect between its critical reception and the good but wonky film itself. It’s like every other bloated blockbuster out there. And it makes the Force Awakens look positively slick and streamlined by comparison.

    • Sorry to say – its not hardcore white fanboys having angerfits. Or trolls from Russia meddling with a huge american moviecompany. Its just REAL true fans that once fell in love with a saga and now finds this movie to be… utter crap. I did. And Im not a russian agent or a troll.

  2. After seeing this audience score, I will not be seeing the Last Jedi in movie theaters. I tend to agree with an audience score more than the critics score in general. I can wait for it to come out on Netflix. I just saw Rogue One on Netflix and enjoyed it. It’s a shame they’re too busy making out-of-touch movies enjoyed by critics but despised by the average audience member. DISGRACEFUL!

  3. That is odd.

Especially considering that star wars would seem to have the kind of built in audience that somethings do that just never fails regardless of quality or not.
Just built in star wars super fans.

But it should be no big secret that critics can be an elitist group of people who don’t necessarily relate to or respect the average audience for the medium that they’re supposed to be experts in. Let alone when we’re talking about genre entertainment that highfalutin metropolitan critics have ALWAYS held a traditional disdain for to the point of no grasp or understanding for its qualities. They judge genre entertainment on a scale of THINGS OTHER then its quality as genre entertainment.

But there might be something even more on display to this stark discord between the audience and the professional critic.

    • Oh please, if anyone’s demonstrating a disconnect from reality it’s you. Hifalutin? Cinema has never been a high art form and critics would be the first to recognize that. What exactly is “always feeling traditional disdain for to the point of no grasp or understanding for its qualities”?? use words much?
