While it seemed obvious that “Squid Game” would return for Season 2, considering how massively popular the series has been for Netflix on a global scale, the creator of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has been coy about committing to more episodes. Well, it appears he’s willing to finally admit the obvious.
Speaking to the AP, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the writer-director-creator of Netflix’s most popular series to date, “Squid Game,” has confirmed plans for Season 2 of his thriller series. And though he’s not willing to give an expected date for when fans might be able to see the new episodes, Hwang is willing to tease a little bit.
“So, there has been so much pressure, so much love, and so much demand for a second season,” said Hwang. “So, I almost feel like you leave us with no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when or how that is going to happen. So I will promise you this…Gi-hun will come back and he will do something for the world.”
For those that haven’t seen the show, if there are people that have actually still held off on watching it, “Squid Game” tells the story of a group of people willing to risk their lives in a series of murderous versions of classic children’s games. Previously, when talking about a sequel series, Hwang mentioned how he wasn’t interested in following the story of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), and instead, he wanted to maybe talk about one of the other characters. However, it appears he’s had a change of heart.
Considering he has yet to really begin development on a second season, fans shouldn’t expect a quick turnaround for “Squid Game” Season 2, especially if the creator decides he wants to write and direct the whole thing again. But for those excited about new episodes, at least we now have confirmation it’ll likely happen.
