‘Spy Who Dumped Me’ Trailer: There’s Nothing Basic About These Badass B*tches

No summer is complete without a great comedy movie and “The Spy Who Dumped Me” looks like a perfect fit. The title, of course, is a riff on the classic Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me.” The early word on this film has been overwhelmingly positive, with several people praising the chemistry between stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. No surprise there. McKinnon has consistently proved herself as the funniest “Saturday Night Live” cast member and Kunis has been crushing it in studio comedies like “Bad Moms” and “Ted.”

So what brings the two together in “The Spy Who Dumped Me?” Check out the synopsis below

Audrey (Kunis) and Morgan (McKinnon) are two thirty-year-old best friends in Los Angeles, who are thrust unexpectedly into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend, who was actually a spy, shows up at their apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Surprising even themselves, the duo jump into action, going on the run throughout Europe from assassins and a suspicious-but-charming British agent, as they hatch a plan to save the world.

The film has an incredible ensemble supporting Kunis and McKinnon consisting of Hasan Minhaj, Sam Heughan, Ivanna Sakhno, Justin Theroux, and Gillian Anderson. Taking up directing duties is Susanna Fogel for her first feature since her breakout debut “Life Partners” back in 2014.

Fogel also co-wrote the film with veteran TV writer David Iserson, whose credits include “Mad Men,” “SNL,” and more.  Speaking with EW, Fogel said the premise of the film came from a love of female friendships and action movies. “We were at lunch one day and one of us said, ‘Broad City meets Bourne.’ Our jumping-off point was, what would we do if we had to run from the cops in, like, my Toyota Prius? What would we do if we were confronted with an assassin? We’d probably make fun of something he was wearing.”

“The Spy Who Dumped Me” opens across the U.S. on August 3.
