When it comes to film marketing, Netflix does things differently than other studios. Whereas you might have a studio such as Disney or Universal begin to market a major film a year ahead with trailers coming five or six months before a release date, Netflix normally doesn’t even announce a release date until about a month beforehand, let alone show marketing materials or a trailer. And that’s exactly what is happening with the new Spike Lee film, “Da 5 Bloods.”

According to a new social media post by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, his latest feature, “Da 5 Bloods,” is arriving on Netflix on June 12. That’s just over a month from now and before today, we had no idea that the streaming service planned on releasing the film anytime soon. And to get the marketing machine rolling, Lee also shared a teaser poster for the film. But we still don’t have any sort of trailer or anything (but that will likely arrive sooner rather than later).
“Da 5 Bloods” stars Chadwick Boseman, Paul Walter Hauser, Norm Lewis, Delroy Lindo, and Jonathan Majors. The film follows the story of Black soldiers that return to Vietnam to find the remains of their squad leader, while also looking for some sort of buried treasure.

The film is the first feature for Lee after the release of his Oscar-winning film, “BlacKkKlansman.” That film returned Lee to the public consciousness and box office success, as it would go on to earn almost $100 million on a $15 million budget. However, with Netflix releasing “Da 5 Bloods” on its streaming service, seemingly without theatrical support, it’ll be interesting to see if Lee’s newest film gets any sort of awards consideration, as it may still qualify based on the new streaming rules for this pandemic era.
Regardless, people all around the world will be able to see “Da 5 Bloods” when it arrives on Netflix on June 12.
