For years, film trailers have featured footage from the film spliced together in a 2-minute rapid-fire montage that is supposed to sell the audience on paying money to see the finished product in theaters. In recent years, the trailer has morphed quite a bit, with teasers being released a year in advance (not to mention little teasers for the teaser). And at the forefront of the teasing is Marvel Studios, who has made fans across the world question whether or not the footage from the trailer is even going to show up in the film, which is exactly what happened with “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
The latest film in the MCU, ‘Far From Home’ tells the story of Peter Parker, freshly back alive after five years away, as he goes on a class trip to Europe. And as anyone who has traveled abroad will tell you, these sorts of trips require plenty of planning and errand-running. And in the trailer for the film, Peter is shown doing a variety of errands, including getting his passport and stopping by the deli, which isn’t used in the finished film.
And according to a new interview with ScreenCrush, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” director Jon Watts explains that those scenes didn’t really fit in the final cut of the film, but will definitely show up down the line.
The big scene that was omitted is a scene from the trailer where Spider-Man has to stop some thugs in his “Iron Spider” suit from ‘Infinity War’ and jokes with the police before heading off. That scene, plus some more are now going to be included in a special short that will be coming to the Blu-ray later this year.
“He had to pick up his passport,” explained Watts. “He went to Delmar’s Deli, which has been rebuilt since it was blown up in ‘Homecoming.’ He had to get a travel adapter and his dual-headphone adapter for the flight. And he had to take down this giant gang. [laughs] Those are his list of things he had to do before he went on his trip. We cut it out of the movie just for pacing; it wasn’t really necessary. But we’ve turned it into its own little short film that will be on the Blu-ray and on the digital download.”
Honestly, when you watch the film, much like the rest of its MCU brethren, you forget that trailer scenes are missing. But it is nice that Watts and Marvel Studios have seemingly found a pretty fun way to include those in an eventual Blu-ray or digital release.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” hits theaters tomorrow.
