What the hell is going on with the “Spider-Man” film franchise, right now? On the one side, you have Sony working tirelessly to get the spinoff films happening, with so many TV shows and features in various stages of development and production, but none of those projects feature Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Then on the other side, there’s Marvel Studios, the co-producers of the latest ‘Spider-Man’ film franchise, but the recently announced plans for Phases 5 and 6 feature absolutely zero Spidey news. Well, it seems as if Kevin Feige is ready to pull back the curtain just a little bit to tease the future of the wallcrawler on the big screen.
Speaking to EW, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, was asked a variety of MCU questions, specifically about the myriad films that are in the works. One of those questions actually has to do with the unknown status of the ‘Spider-Man’ film franchise. Well, in typical Feige fashion, he doesn’t give any details, but he did confirm that a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film is not only in the works, but writers have already been brought on to pen the script.
“All I will say is that we have the story,” teased Feige. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”
Sure, the idea of a “Spider-Man 4” seems like a no-brainer. The previous film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” earned nearly $2 billion at the box office and was the biggest in the franchise by a mile. Unfortunately for Sony, that film also marked the end of Tom Holland’s contract with the studio and the film ended with a tease that could theoretically restart the franchise, if needed. All that to say, there were a lot of questions.
Now, we don’t have confirmation that Tom Holland is returning as Peter Parker. But the fact that Marvel Studios is confirming that work is already being made on the script seems to majorly hint to the fact that Holland will definitely return and the next appearance of Peter Parker will, in fact, be in the MCU.
Now, we just need official confirmation from Sony about the status of the film, plus some sort of idea about where it could fit in the Marvel Studios slate, as there are quite a few films and TV shows that need to get slotted in. Of course, there’s still plenty of time before “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” and Sony loves to rush these ‘Spider-Man’ films as quickly as possible. We’ll just have to wait and see.
