Got a Tip?

Soundtrack: ‘Waltz With Bashir’ Also Hits Early

Soundtracks keep coming out quietly on the sly. Add Ari Folman’s soundtrack to the excellent animated film about the 1983 Beirut massacre, “Waltz With Bashir.”

We failed to write a proper review of this documentary based on Folman’s personal nightmarish-dreams about the tragedy (he was an soldier in the Israeli Army in the war with Lebanon), but we did note its commanding effect and its examination of the staying-power of guilt.

We also wrote about the music. For a film with such a heavy subject matter, its surprisingly comical and light-hearted at times (but never disrespectfully). The film features a score composed by minimalist electronic musician Max Richter, and features songs by OMD (“Enola Gay“), P.I.L. (“This Is Not A Love Song“), Navadei Haucaf (“Good Morning Lebanon” which is written for the movie), The Click (“Inkubator”) and Zeev Tene‘s remake of the Cake song “Korea,” retitled, “Beiruth.”

The soundtrack disc which came out on import earlier this month, only features the OMD and P.I.L. songs, but does feature most, if not all of Richter’s score which is sonorous and extremely moving and rich. A bunch of tracks have leaked to YouTube, so we’ll include them below under the tracklist and we highly recommend you check them out and the film which hits theaters in limited release (NY only to begin) on December 26 and expands from there. The film was remarkably accepted to all the major film festivals this year, including, the New York Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, Telluride and the Cannes Film Festival if you want to get a strong hint of its quality. Here’s the trailer if you haven’t already seen it. Sadly, the film was not eligible to run in the Best Documentary Film Oscar category because of a stupid technicality, but there’s hopes that it will still earn an nomination in the animated category.

  1. Hi, in the trailer (saw it yesterday at the movies) there is a really good electronic dance song, really high intensity. which song is that on the playlist below?

  2. i’ve been looking all over the place for “good morning lebanon” and “inkubator” but i can’t find either of them. do you know if they ever plan on releasing that song for download?

  3. I think the music in the scene with boy with the RPG in the orchard is JS Bach – not sure – but the piano music which plays while the protagonist is hallucinating his own burial, and later at the end of the film, is the slow movement from Schubert’s penultimate piano sonata in A major, D959.

  4. Wow, I saw this movie yesterday- found it extremely affecting- the music plays a big role in that…between you and all the comments all my questions have been answered- thanks! Definitely buying this soundtrack- though the tracks make me a bit melancholy.

  5. I would also like to know the name of the song played during the boy with the RPG scene. Someone mentioned it might be JS bach, but there are so many songs to sift through it would be greatly appreciated if somebody knew the exact piece.

  6. 🙁 It's a pity. I bought the Soundtrack, and found out just now that it doesn't include "Good Morning Lebanon". It is not that that was the only song that I wanted, but, gee, I really liked most of the soundtrack, and I thought I was getting it all. I can't seem to get the file posted earlier.

  7. The song during the orchard is Harpsichord concerto No.5 in F minor, BWV 1056 2nd Mov't. Largo
    By Bach.

The other one I believe is the Aria from the Goldberg variations, also by Bach, towards the beginning of the film.
