Got a Tip?

Sorry, Joseph Gordon-Levitt Won’t Be Batman In ‘Justice League’

nullWell, that was fun while it lasted. Kind of. Yesterday, the interwebs threw the rumor signal into the sky as Hitfix claimed with "absolute certainty" that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be the new Batman in "Justice League." But 24 hours later, that word hasn't panned out.

Hollywood.com chased down the actor's reps who "have refuted the rumor entirely." Now, some people are going to say that of course nothing is going to be confirmed until Warner Bros. is good and ready to make an announcement. But really, this didn't make much sense to begin with. "The Dark Knight Rises" makes it clear that JGL is Robin, so turning him into Batman seemed a bit…odd (though yes, the end of 'Rises' does suggest he steps in to replace Bruce Wayne in fighting crime).

Moreover, if Warner Bros. wanted to piss off Christopher Nolan, this would be a good way to do it. As we said yesterday, the director has gone out of his way to keep his Batman films self contained and outside of any other DC Comics franchise. So it seemed a bit bizarre that Warners would tie a very loose thread between "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Justice League" for no other reason than because they can.

We think the smart money is on Warner Bros. using "Justice League" to launch Batman (and all those other heroes) all over again, instead of trying to hang on to the success of Nolan's closed trilogy. Now, could the studio have talked about it? Sure. They'd probably love to continue the Nolan movies if they could, but he has pretty much moved on. Could we see a tie between "Man Of Steel" and "Justice League"? That is certainly way more plausible and makes a lot more sense.

Anyway, one rumor down, but we're sure another will crop up soon enough to get us all speculating once again. [via Total Film]

  1. Will all of you SHUT THE FUCK UP?! Jesus Christ. Y'all bitch and moan more than someone who spends all their time bitching and moaning…. You all are tryin to have an intellectual conversation on a FUCKING HIPSTER-ASS BLOG FORUM!!! Keep your opinions to yourselves, and trust me… We will all be much better off. BTW JGL doesnt become Robin, Nightwing, or Batman… He creates his own superhero identity called the 50/50 man… He developes a cancerous infection (based off the Rogan-Universe of 50/50 the true story of one of his closest friends.) He has the ability to control the minds, movements, and pooping schedules of any enemy that crosses his path. Nolan out.

  2. Well if you guys read the article you can understand why people would think robin. Instead of batman. But when I saw the film I thought blake was going to be batman. But the man that brought you the trilogy says many times not to reference things from the comic books. So take that out of all your answers.

  3. Lol at people who still think Blake is the super hero "Robin". It's his first name. It would be a really poor super hero to choose when your real name is exactly the same. It's called The Dark Knight Rises. At the end of the film, we see Blake rise on the platform. There were themes throughout the movie stating that it doesn't matter who is behind the mask of Batman.

  4. "Robin" John Blake is just his name, not actually robin. He takes on becoming batman after Bruce wants to settle down and the suit comes up. the theme of anyone can be batman is expressed throughout the trilogy. next time actually pay attention to the ending. it makes perfect sense, and obviously JGL has interest in the role and they want to set up the JLA like Marvel did with the avengers. This is a reboot, not a continuation and they probably want to sneek bruce or batman in the new film coming out in 2013 for Man of Steel.

  5. well i think its a prity good idea to use JGL as a thread between nolans Batman and forthcoming Justice league movie…..remember bruice wayne has not died just moved on as Alfred wanted him to do so…if they could team up JGL and cavill in man of steel credit sequence …who in early Justice league movie dies needing bruce to came back as world is in need batman again this time with other protectors…it would be awesome.

Let's not forget that Robin had worn the Batman costume before in the comics so this idea doesn't seem totally absurd. I think Nolan is done with Batman, so the next Batman reboot will have to start over with a new actor, and although it's pretty obvious that John Blake was Nolan's vision of "Robin" that went hand in hand with the more realistic dark theme of TDKR, JGL just doesn't fit the mold of Batman. Like I said below, maybe if he bulked on some weight that would help, but even still he is kind of boyish looking for a man in his early 30s.

Personally, I say reintroduce Batman for a new reboot/franchise in Justice League but maybe not as dark as Nolan took the character (though it was very entertaining and very genius the way Nolan made Batman IMO.)

  7. I think if Christian bale is never returning as the Bat, it would be good to see actors like Jake Gyllenhal , Colin Farrell, Ryan Gosling, as Bruce wayne & Batman.I think Jake Gyllenhal is a good choice & if there is a Joker & Bane in the Rebooted Batman Movie or justice league Leonardo Dicaprio & Dwayne johnson would be perfect. JGL is a fantastic actor and he may fit as a rebooted nightwing/robin/dick grayson in justice league but not as a John Blake or Batman or a continuity of Nolan series. The bat deserves 6 or almost 6 feet with good physique

  9. "They need batman to be intellectual technologist like ironman to match him with his extraordinaric teammates..But if they do that to JGL for tie up with nolan universe they are doing injustice with Bruce Wayne from Nolan triology..A reboot is the best option. But just dont do it from the character orgin.Even if incredible hulk boomed i think that did best with hulk's orgin with footages in the beginning."

  10. I don't understand why people keep saying Levitt becomes Robin in the film. He does not become Robin, his birth name is Robin. Instead of making an an alter ego, they made Robin his name. He is a believer in the Batman, and as the film progresses become a partner/sidekick of his. And in the end, inherits the Batcave. Not to necessarily to take up the mantle, but for him to possibly do so. If Gotham got so bad again, that it needed a hero. But after the events of Rises, I don't think a city could get any worse again. It reached the peak of its decadents, nearly ripped to part until the citizens, along side the return of the Bruce Wayne fighting for their city, in the end being victorious is all the story I need. Of course I would love to see another film, but we won't. And we don't need it.

People are treating the ending of the trilogy like an episode of Brad Meltzer's Decoded.

Also, I saw the interview with JGL.. all he said in a nut shell was if they offered him that role, and if there was a great script and a good director attached. at best he'd consider it. Getting sick of these rumors online. But it would be near impossible for Nolan's batman in a Justice League. It just doesn't make sense, especially this far along.

  11. The films don't really make anything about JGL clear, since Robin's real name has never been Robin. He's a hodgepodge of various incarnations of Robin, and at worst, he'd be Nightwing (a name that's semi-fear inspiring) and at best, he'd be Batman to keep that myth alive: this guy took a nuke and still lives, superstitious cowardly lot, etc.

  12. LOL, doesn't mean anything. Actors reps deny things all the time when it is not the time to mention it. The fact this rumor came from a reputable source that leaked other things that ended up being true says something

  13. It would be a bad idea to tie Nolan's "universe" and Justice League together. I assume they'd want to include The Joker at some point beacause he's the most popular DC villain ever. They'd have to have Nolan-universe-Joker and that's a bit tricky. They'd have to cast someone to impersonate Heath Ledger's interpretation and that's just a stupid idea. It makes more sense that they'll launch new Batman franchise with new actors and they'll appear in the Justice League.

  14. Kind of like how Nolan said they're would be no Robin in his trilogy, right? Didn't Bale say he'd chain himself up in his dressing room and refuse to go to work if robin appeared in DKR?

Look, John Blake did inherit the mantle, but not as Batman. It's clearly obvious that Blake becomes Nightwing. Nightwing is Dick Grayson after he finishes his tenure as Robin and becomes his own identity.

Man of Steel will tie in to Justice league. Expect a cameo similar to Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man. Nightwing will show up and present some new threat to Superman so he can help.

These new films are supposed to maintain that gritty realism. I mean why else is Nolan godfathering Man of Steel?

  15. Thank god because there's no way I'm seeing a Justice League movie with some John Blake character as Batman. Leave the Nolan verse alone and just start fresh! I have zero interest in seeing Joe as Batman and I say that as a fan of his work.

  16. "The Dark Knight Rises goes out of the way to make it clear JGL is Robin, so turning him to Batman seemed a bit…odd"
I think it would be less odd than most of the things that happen at the end of TDKR.
