Got a Tip?

Sony Will “Lend” Spider-Man To A Marvel Studios Film Next But No “Specific Plans” Yet

Spider-Man” franchise fans are certainly curious if the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures working relationship will be moving forward beyond this latest installment, but there are multiple signs that we’ll continue to see Peter Parker interacting with the greater group of Marvel characters for years to come.

Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman was asked on the red carpet premiere of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” about the future of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and confirmed to Comic Book that there is still indeed an outstanding Marvel Studios film that the web-slinger will show up in, but what that project is seemingly hasn’t been chosen and Rothman is keeping mum.

“No specific plans. It’s reciprocal,” he explained. “So we lend one, and they lend one, and that’s how Benedict [Cumberbatch] is in this movie. So we have one more ‘lend back’ that’s committed. But the thing that I can say, and this actually the accurate scoop on this, which is that the two companies have a terrific working relationship. I think it’s a mutual hope that that would continue. But there really isn’t anything definitive at this moment, because the truth of the matter is, we gotta ride this puppy and see what happens.”

However, Rothman played coy while responding to Variety’s question (see below) about the studio being committed to a new trilogy after producer Amy Pascal suggested that a trilogy was already in the works. Rothman calls Pascal “optimistic” but insists that “the reality is nothing is set” suggesting that deals haven’t closed.

It’s unclear where Holland’s Spider-Man will show up outside of the Sony Pictures projects, but perhaps something like “Secret Wars” or whatever “Avengers 5” becomes is a good bet to make. There is a good shot that Holland’s new contract might allow him to show up in the many spinoffs Sony is working on as “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” has already teed up and even something like “Kraven The Hunter.”
