Next year’s Paul Feig-directed “Ghostbusters” is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the franchise reboot. You may have forgotten that earlier this year it was revealed that Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd set up the production shingle Ghost Corps on the Sony lot to develop and oversee everything going on with the property they started. At the time, there was rumors of a big Marvel-style shared universe of movies being worked on, but that has since quieted down to some degree, but the idea are still percolating, and a new one is on the table.

THR reports that an animated feature is in the works, and that’s kind of a no-brainer. The franchise has already seen two animated TV shows, “The Real Ghosbusters” and “Extreme Ghostbusters.” The former was a more popular success, running for seven seasons, launching its own shortlived spinoff (“Slimer!“), and tons of merchandise. So, not really a big surprise that Sony wants to replicate that formula on a bigger scale.
Right now it’s all in very early stages with no writers or directors attached, but Reitman is expected to produce. Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers-helmed, Channing Tatum-led “Ghostbusters” effort is also still developing, according to the trade. Essentially, even if Feig’s movie flops next summer, the stage is set for a variety of ways to keep the brand alive and for Sony not to run into a situation like they did with “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Whether or not we actually need this much “Ghostbusters” is for the audience to decide.
