As theatrical dates continue to be in flux, and a reported VFX pipeline crisis is building thanks to the delays created by COVID, Sony Pictures has updated their 2022 and 2023 slate giving audiences an idea of what to look forward to in the coming months along with some having to wait a bit longer for more popular titles.
First up, Sony announced their highly anticipated animated film “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” has been bumped to June 2, 2023. Initially set for an October 7 release, the movie is a sequel to the Oscar-winning original centering on the Miles Morales iteration of Spider-Man. “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Part II,” the already announced threequel in the “Spider-Verse” series, will swing into theaters on March 29, 2024. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are the trio of directors behind the two installments.
Javier Bardem‘s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” from directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon takes the October 7 spot that “Across The Spider-Verse” vacated, moving up from November 18.
The J.D. Dillard-directed Korean War drama “Devotion” starring Jonathan Majors (“Creed III,” “Loki“) and Glen Powell (“Top Gun: Maverick“) will now have a wide release on October 28.
Also, on the live-action Spidey front, Sony gave “Madame Web” the release date of July 7, 2023. The Marvel spinoff will see S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones“) direct actresses Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney that has a script from screenwriters the “Morbius” writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. A reminder that Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s other Sony-Verse film “Kraven The Hunter” is coming out on January 13, 2023.
And lastly, “The Equalizer 3” has been set for Sept. 1, 2023. This is the first time Sony has officially announced the sequel with the expectation that we’ll see star Denzel Washington and direct Antoine Fuqua reunite for the third installment. We’ll be curious to see who they’ll cast opposite Washington in the new action flick.
