Sonic The Hedgehog’ Trailer: The Character Gets A New Look & Paramount Hopes Fans Don’t Hate It This Time

As we approach the end of 2019, it’s good to look back at the year’s most interesting, and perhaps embarrassing, news stories in the world of film. And without a doubt, the release of the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” trailer fits in that category. However, months later, Paramount returns with a second trailer and we’re sure the executives are hoping fans don’t universally destroy this one.

Back in April, fans revolted in a way that no one in the film industry has previously seen, as they tore apart the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” trailer. The big gripe wasn’t the over-the-top performance from Jim Carrey, and it wasn’t the blandness of James Marsden. The fans just couldn’t get over the terrible character design of the film’s title character. Ruthless memes and jokes flooded social media, and Paramount noticed. The studio then went back to the drawing board, delaying the film in hopes that more time could be given to changing the character.

Half a year later, and the second trailer is the debut of this new look. And you know what? It actually works. Sadly, now that the title character looks just like he should, the rest of the film is now ripe for ridicule, including the same incredibly campy performance from Jim Carrey and the plot, which seems downright silly. But then again, this is a family film, and in that regard, it looks…fine.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” will hit theaters on February 14, 2020.

Here’s the synopsis:

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
