Last year, we knew, based only on the fan reaction to the poster, that Paramount’s upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog” film is going to be…interesting. Of course, we should have known right away, considering the live-action film is based on a video game about a bright blue hedgehog that can run at super speeds and is fighting a villain named Dr. Robotnik. But we really didn’t have any clue just how strange ‘Sonic’ truly is.
There’s a lot to unpack after watching the first trailer for the upcoming children’s movie. First, it’s incredibly weird seeing a live-action Sonic. Just as odd as fans were expecting it to be. Unlike the upcoming “Detective Pikachu,” the lead hedgehog in this film appears to live in our modern world, and is the only bright blue speedster of his kind, making him stand out in a big, big way.

Then, you have Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey in the film. Where do we start? The trailer gives him a large chunk of the footage, with a really unusual interaction with a guy in the military, where the actor is hamming it up in ways we really haven’t seen since the days of “Ace Ventura.” This could either be a great comedic performance or something that makes you cringe from beginning to end. Right now, honestly, it’s in the latter territory.
Lastly, what the hell is with Coolio’s ‘Gangster’s Paradise?’ What a really curious song choice.
The film stars Carrey alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular hedgehog. ‘Sonic’ is directed by Jeff Fowler, who is making his directorial debut on the film.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” hits theaters on November 8.
Here’s the synopsis:
