British actor Idris Elba is having a bit of a moment after the release of James Gunn‘s “The Suicide Squad” as his character Bloodsport is one of the highlights of the new DC Comics characters in the well-received R-rated sequel.
Well, Elba has landed another key role in another fan-driven studio sequel, as he announced on Twitter that he’ll voice the CGI-animated character Knuckles (A red anthropomorphic short-beaked echidna) in Paramount Pictures‘ kid-friendly “Sonic The Hedgehog 2,” which is currently in post-production after filming in Vancouver.
Knuckles won’t be the only supporting character from the video games making the jump the films, as Tails will also show up after being teased at the end of “Sonic The Hedgehog.” Elba joins a cast that includes James Marsden (“X-Men,” “Westworld“) as the lead human character Tom, Jim Carrey as the franchise villain Dr. Robotnik, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and hilarious comedian Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic.
It’s still unknown who will voice Tails in the sequel.

The original film wasn’t really on people’s minds until there was a huge outcry after the teaser trailer revealed that Sonic’s design was a little disturbing. This led the studio to fix the look of Sonic well into the post-production process, adding extra costs to the budget. It went on to earn $319.7 million back in 2020, one of the few pandemic era films to cross the $300 million-dollar mark globally.
Paramount has given “Sonic The Hedgehog 2” a release date of April 8, 2022.
