Got a Tip?

Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Kill Switch’ Becomes ‘No Sudden Move’ & Adds Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Julia Fox & More

We’ve known about Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming film “No Sudden Move” (formerly known as “Kill Switch”) for a while now. Back in November, we first reported on the project with Don Cheadle, Josh Brolin, and Sebastian Stan all in talks to star in the film. But boy, oh boy, what a difference a year and a schedule-smashing pandemic makes. Now, Don Cheadle is set to star in the film, but his supporting cast has been substantially changed.

According to HBO Max and Warner Bros. in a joint press release, Soderbergh has finalized the cast for his upcoming thriller, with Don Cheadle being joined by a laundry list of incredible names. The cast includes (some of which were previously revealed) Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Amy Seimetz, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Kieran Culkin, Brendan Fraser, Noah Jupe, Bill Duke, Frankie Shaw, and Julia Fox. The cast is filled with people that have either previously worked with Soderbergh in one way or another, as well as some new faces that are almost immediately recognizable by anyone who has seen a movie or TV series over the past couple of years.

“The last time I shot a movie in Detroit with a great script and a great cast things worked out really well, so I’m very excited behind my mask right now,” said Soderbergh.

Leading the way, we don’t even really need to talk about Cheadle, Del Toro, Hamm, Liotta, Culkin, and Fraser. Those are definitely household names. There’s also David Harbour, of “Strangers Things” fame, as well as another recent TV star, Frankie Shaw (“SMILF”). Let’s not forget actor-turned-filmmaker Amy Seimetz, who is no stranger to working with Soderbergh, as she was one of the creators of “The Girlfriend Experience” series. Also, Bill Duke is fucking Bill Duke (who starred in “High Flying Bird“), so there should be no question why he’s in the cast. And if we had to point out two names that are maybe not as well-known, those are Noah Jupe and Julia Fox, but both of those actors had incredible performances in supporting roles in 2019 films such as “Honey Boy” and “Uncut Gems,” respectively. Basically, there isn’t a “meh” name among them.

Interestingly, there are a couple of names that are noticeably missing. Sebastian Stan was one of the original actors supposedly cast for the film, but he’s no longer in the cast. And recently, the filmmaker mentioned that George Clooney was going to appear, as well. Now, we don’t have any information about why they’re not in the cast now, but with COVID delaying the start date and other projects for both Clooney and Stan, it’s likely scheduling can be blamed.

“No Sudden Move” is set in 1955 Detroit and follows a group of small-time criminals that are given the simple job of stealing a document. However, things get thrown into chaos when they realize that there’s far more to the job than was originally expected. The film will likely be released on HBO Max sometime in 2021, considering the pace at which Soderbergh makes films. But no release date has been announced.
