“G.I. Joe: Retaliation” may have come out eight years ago, but the series isn’t quite over yet. A third film in the series is on the way, but another standalone movie comes out before that: a look into the past of one of the most popular characters in the G.I Joe team, the silent ninja commando Snake Eyes.
“Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins” will serve as an origin story to a fan-favorite character whose past has always been a mystery to the series’s fans. Maybe the movie will solve a few of them, and there’s an array from which to choose. Throughout G.I. Joe lore, the character’s real name, personal history, and certain parts of his military training are classified or unknown. The movie could also center around one of the first missions Snake Eyes ever did as Joe’s commando, when a helicopter crash severely disfigured his face and permanently damaged his voice box, leaving him mute.

While Ray Park played Snake Eyes in “Retaliation” and 2009’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra,” a new actor will take over for the new film: Henry Golding of “Crazy Rich Asians” fame. While Golding is no stranger to action films thanks to his turn as Dry Eye in Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman” last year, this is his first starring role in one.

Robert Schwentke (‘R.I.P.D.‘) is behind the camera for “Snake Eyes,” while Evan Spiliotopoulos (‘The Unholy‘) provides the screenplay. Is Henry Golding up for action movie stardom?
