Got a Tip?

Skrillex Is Writing Music For Harmony Korine’s ‘Spring Breakers,’ Randall Poster Doing Music Supervision

nullIf you're asking "What's a Skrillex?" chances are you're not in high school. If you haven't heard his music — yes, he's an electronic musician — you might recognize his face or perhaps his mad sweep of hair that flops over the shaved side of his head. Either way, the guy won three Grammys last year and is on every kid's iPhone or Android or whatever they carry around these days. And now he's making the leap to scoring movies, and it's on a project that's already pretty far out there.

Speaking with Pitchfork, frequent Wes Anderson collaborator, music supervisor Randall Poster (who has also worked on "The Hangover," "Boardwalk Empire," "The Vow," "Whip It" and many more) revealed that he's currently working on Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and Skrillex is along for the ride.

"I'm accustomed to being the oldest person at a gig, but when I went to see Skrillex at Roseland this year, it was dramatic. There were a lot of kids that looked like they were 15 years old. But I loved it. I truly loved it. I think Skrillex is just brilliant. When I walked into that club, I felt like I swallowed the music– it was like 'Alien,' like it went into me," he said about first hearing the EDM artist. "I'm working on Harmony Korine's movie 'Spring Breakers' now, and Skrillex is doing original music for us. I had heard of Skrillex, but I wasn't watching it that closely. And Harmony, who I've worked with forever, sent me a link to some Skrillex YouTubes, and I saw one had 54 million hits– I thought he had somehow figured out a way to manipulate the numbers. And then it dawns on you: There are kids that are never going to buy a record. They're just going to play songs on YouTube."

That's actually a pretty inspired choice all told, and while we're not exactly fans of his music, Skrillex's roof raising tunes and style kind of perfectly fits with the vibe we're expecting from the movie. Starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, the film follows four college-aged girls who decide to rob a fast food restaurant in order to pay for the annual getaway, and who get thrown in the slammer once they get there. A rapping drug and arms dealer bails out the girls, and coaxes them to kill his nemesis Arch.

We'll be curoius to see what tunes Poster brings into the equation as well, but we're pretty excited to see Korine go full tilt in a completely new direction; it's certainly a huge 180 from getting Sun City Girls to work on "Mister Lonely."

No release date yet for "Spring Breakers" but with each new bit of info, the movie gets more enticing. Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next.

  1. Yeah thats what I'm saying exactly, that it's a question of style. He used to be an auteur in the classic sense of the word, now it feels like he's just working in his own already established style and not experimenting really. Again I hope this movie proves me wrong. Trash Humpers definietly falls into the second category but it at least gave some memorable images.

  2. I don't know why exactly but I feel like he really went from making some of the most original, interesting work to just doing predictable Vice magazine junk. I'm thinking the difference between Gummo, Julien Donkey- Boy, the No More Workhorse Blues video, stuff like that, and these fashion commercial short films that he's been doing lately, and the Die Antwoord thing too I thought was horrible. I hope I'm wrong and this movie is awesome but as a long time fan I gotta say I feel like the dude is slipping (and btw I take no issue with the bigger more mainstream movie thing either, I think that's great, I'm just saying that the re cent stuff hasn't been as good in my eyes)
