On April 30, 2018, Blake Lively uploaded a picture to Instagram, engaging in a friendly game of hangman with her audience. Later, after a lot of guessing from fans about what the puzzle could be, she revealed the answer, “What happened to Emily?” Some of us on the internet didn’t think anything about this game of hangman, especially since Ben Schwartz had just uploaded a video on Twitter and Instagram, playing a game of charades with his audience at the same time.
However, when Blake deleted (or archived) all of her photos on Instagram, unfollowed everyone, including husband Ryan Reynolds, and started following only people named Emily Nelson, we knew something was up. Fortunately, this social media purge seems to be a frenzy-inducing, marketing tactic to promote her new film “A Simple Favor” directed by “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig. Here’s the official synopsis.
A SIMPLE FAVOR, directed by Paul Feig, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily’s (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding) in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge
In the approximately 90-second teaser trailer, we are reminded of a young Serena van der Woodsen, with Lively looking stylish, making martinis, and charming all her friends. Just when you think you’re going to hear Kristen Bell‘s voice come in with a “Hello, Upper East Siders, Gossip Girl here,” all the glamour is replaced with cop cars, sirens, and confusion prompted by her mysterious disappearance. Leaving us asking, where did she go? Did she dye her hair? Did she take her martini’s with her? Is this a “Gossip Girl” season 1, episode 16 moment?
Blake stars alongside Anna Kendrick, Rupert Friend, and Henry Golding. The film is slated for release on September 14, 2018.
