Simon Pegg Explains Why Alice Eve’s Carol Marcus Wasn’t In ‘Star Trek Beyond’

While the gang got back together for the rollicking “Star Trek Beyond” (though, for a brief moment, Karl Urban nearly turned it down), there was one crew member of the Enterprise you have forgotten about.

Introduced in “Star Trek Into Darkness,” Alice Eve‘s Carol Marcus was maybe not the best written character, and certainly was the most questionably utilized, infamously remembered for a scene in which she gratuitously strips down to her underwear for no real reason at all, and not much else. The film’s co-writer and producer Damon Lindelof later apologized for that sequence, but overall, Marcus wasn’t really given the chance to shine. And obviously, if you’ve seen ‘Beyond,’ she’s nowhere to be found. But that’s not to say she can’t pop up down the line.

“With this it felt like we would under-serve her if we included her, she might end up feeling like she hadn’t been given the amount of screen-time she deserves, so rather than bring her in and just have her be a supporting role, like, have her not be in this one, and when the time comes [bring her back], the worst thing to do would be to have her in the film and have that character be killed, and that felt like a cynical thing to do,” ‘Beyond’ co-writer Simon Pegg told Star Trek Podcast. “We thought rather than have Carol Marcus not be used to a reasonable capacity, let’s just not include her, have her be alive, in canon, and ready to come back at any time.”

And that seems reasonable enough, especially considering that Pegg and co. already struggled to find something for Zoe Saldana‘s Uhura to do in ‘Beyond’ other than break up with Spock. But whether or not we’ll see Eve in “Star Trek 4” remains to be seen.

  1. I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to spend as much time as they did on more than the Kirk/Spock dynamic that largely dominated the first two films. They were juggling so many balls that I can fully understand them not adding another one, but I would have liked at least a throwaway line explaining why Marcus wasn’t around.

  2. Well it STILL didn’t seem right to me! If they had just let Alice be in the movie, all they had to do is just NOT HAVE HER CHARACTER BE KILLED in it then! And they BETTER bring her back for the 4th movie!!!
