Got a Tip?

Simon Kinberg Explains Why Rogue Was Cut From ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Plus Quicksilver Clip

X-Men, Rogue

Having already discussed in depth The Best & Worst Of ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past, there’s still more to dig into about the mutant-filled movie, particularly when it comes to those who only got a few seconds of screen time. Yes, there will be spoilers, so in case you haven’t seen the movie yet, you might want to skip to something else.

Anyway, while Anna Paquin‘s Rogue briefly shows up at the end of ‘DOFP’ in Charles Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, she initially had a much larger role in the film. The word of the character being snipped from the final cut first emerged late last year. “Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it,” director Bryan Singer said at the time. “But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go.” So what exactly was Rogue up to in that deleted material?

According to writer Simon Kinberg, when Kitty Pryde gets injured by Wolverine during their time travel session, Rogue steps in to absorb Kitty’s powers so she can stay stable, keeping Wolverine safely in the past. But that’s not all. Another excised sequence had Professor X, Magneto, and Iceman teaming up on going to rescue Rogue from the Sentinels. It was a lot of stuff, but ultimately, it couldn’t stay.

“I thought it would increase the urgency and the stakes of the plot in the future, but it actually does the opposite, because it makes you feel like there is an answer out there. You think once Rogue gets here, we’ll have an unlimited amount of time. The ticking clock that we’d established with Kitty getting wounded and losing her powers… well, Rogue would show up and press stop on the clock,” Kinberg told Empire. “So for all of those narrative reasons, there was this ten-minute subplot that had to go.”

And, really, that makes a lot of sense. ‘DOFP’ has so much going on already that a Rogue-centered plot thread certainly sounds like too much of a good thing. Thoughts? Weigh in below, but first, here’s a clip of Evan Peters‘ new fan fave Quicksilver, who was served up in just the right amount. [via AVClub]

  1. They never wrote Rogue right in the first place, and did a disservice that translated into Anna Paquin\’s performance. Maybe not having Mystique in her life softened/weakened her resolve. As for super powers, in the comics, mutants lose and regain their powers over the years and different plots, it\’s not a stretch to regain or even get secondary mutations, something the films never properly touched either. They cherry picked and got a few sour ones.

  2. It seems that leaving Rogue in would have made the film make more sense. Rogue is the one in that can actually use the mutant power she absorbs. And in the comics she even takes on their appearance. These movies make $$ because the true fans of the comics and animated series go in hopes of seeing accuracy, but it NEVER HAPPENS. Just like the first 3 X-Men movies they use good characters to lure you in, then everything turns to shit. Continuity people, give us the X-Men movie we deserve. Stop trying to base it in reality so it becomes a social agenda. it's a comic about people with super powers, make it so on the big screen as well. Stop disappointing the true fans.

  3. EXACTLY! This is coming from someone who has never read the comics and someone who loves J Law but… why the hell was Mystique so god damn important in this movie? She shape shifts, she's a damn good shape shifter. That's it. It would have made so much since if they had went back in time to stop them from getting Rogue, you know, the one who can actually absorb and use other mutants powers? Simon already said “And she is such a great actress, I wanted to give her real drama and emotion to play.” What he want to say was “She’s such a big hit right now, I kinda wanted to capitalize off of that.” That wanted to have as many big names as possible like The Avengers does, that’s all. Jennifer can't even be blamed in this, she didn’t demand a bigger role for the next film after First Class, and it was all Bryan and Simon!

  4. I think it sucks that she was cut. And I hope it gets put on the dvd. Like it was supposed to be seen, not in the extras. That whole extra crap is cheating!

  5. Hiccup meets his mom, some dude from another country starts to hunt dragons. They capture hiccup's and some dragons. Mom, dad , hiccup and friends all work together and free the dragons.bad guy start to love the dragons in the end . The bloody trailer spoiled the entire movie for me.

The trailer completely spoiled the movie experience at the cinema. What a wasted opportunity ? Winter soldier, Days of future past and how to train your dragon 2 has entire story within the trailer. Any person with common sense can figure out what is going to happen in the beginning , in the middle and in the end. Why studios do this? I watched the edge of tomorrow and it blew me away. Then I watched the trailer for EOT and the entire movie and its key plots including what is the WHOLE movie about in the 2 min 20 sec trailer. I did some online research and found out most of true film lovers NEVER watch the trailer before watching the actual movie because it completely destroys the entire movie experience. google" Kinsta presents – Why I Don't Watch Trailers" May everyone enjoy the movies to the max. ( Never watch trailers again)

  6. please let this be the last of the Bryan Singer hack jobs called Xmen that in reality have all been movies dedicated to Hugh Jackman playing wolverine as a tall no fighting ability (other than bar room brawling), muscle flexing metrosexual in skinny jeans. Hopefully there's a reboot coming soon with action, and special effect scenes better than the ones meant for broadway that Singer brings to the table. A movie that will actually respect the material and not turn cool, sexy characters like mystique into a strange rubber/scaley looking being with a kling-on forehead, greasy hair and no sexual organs. Or characters like beast into some cheap remake of Michael Jackson's Thriller wolfman costume. Give it to someone like Zack Snyder.

  7. Cutting those scenes out was wrong ,it took away a chance to see the original cast together as a whole and simply see the Xmen work together as a Team . It would not have taken away from anything .To me it always is about selling the DVD with deleted scenes. If anything put them back into the movie and make it right.

  8. I really don't think Rogue would have "stopped the clock". The sentinels were still coming anyway, and that's the real reason why (if the past hadn't been changed) they ended up just about dead in the present. Man, I so wish Rogue's scenes hadn't been cut! Still an amazing movie nonetheless.

  9. Anybody else thinks that Jennifer Lawerence is overrated? Unfairly got the award in Silver Lining's Playbook given that her role was so basic, while Bradley Cooper put on a showcase in acting? Jennifer Lawerence is so boring and she has the same facial expression throughout a movie. Boring!

  10. can anybody tell when the professor was paralised from hip below in part 5: X-men 1st class then how come he stand and walk in part 4:X-men wolverine origins????he is shown standing, bald and aged at the end of the part 4: wolverine origins…how??

  11. How about they explain why the Sentinels did not target themselves…since they apparently have the mutant X gene harvested from Mystique within them in order to "adapt" and shape shift…don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but that was a major plot issue on Singers part.

  12. Oh please they need to give up the bull they cut Rogue because they felt it better to give mystic air time because Jennifer Laurence and center the movie around Wolverine then have the story line actually makes sense or be comic book accurate

  13. *spoiler* since Wolverine sucessfully changed the future and Mystique didn't actually kill those government officicals the timeline for rogue may have changed. Meaning maybe Mystique did end up raising her and now Rogue will possibly have crossed paths with Ms Marvel by the time Age of Apocalpyse. I feel like Rogue will def be super power'd in that movie. Professor told Wolverine in the end that they have alot to talk about. Im just upset that they never explained why professor was alive even after Phoenix killed him

  14. Rogue's powers were the ones the Sentinels really needed to absorb other mutant powers not Mystic's. She is a shape shifter she doesn't copy other mutants powers.

  15. It is not Anna Paquin's fault that Rogue on the X-Men films is crappy. Trust me she can act like how the real Rogue acts. It's how the director, who was not an X-Men fan to begin with that made Rogue like that. Rogue in that future couldn't have gotten Ms. Marvel's powers because Rogue didn't get the chance to be fostered by Mystique. Rogue was working for the bad guys at the time she absorbed Ms. Marvel's powers.

  16. No one is crying from Rogue's part being snipped, she's such a bad character in the original trilogy, she's a walking mcguffin in the first, irrelevant in the second and basically a traitor in the third. Not even a mention to her comic origins, they half assed her powers and butchered the original character.

  17. I enjoyed the movie but was really wanting to see a Rogue that was powered up.

I wanted the Rogue that had the Carol Danvers powers or wanted to see her absorb all of the X-Men's powers to see her trash some Sentinels. I have waited a long time to see if Singer would actually due Rogue some justice.

Looks like I will have to wait for the next movie.

  18. "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" is without question the best X-Men film. A tour de force by Bryan Singer. I don't understand why anyone is saying that this film "screwed up" the timline?

Brett Ratner did that with the awful "X-Men: The Last Stand".

This movie basically fixed that. Watch the final scenes of "DOFP" and you will see.
The "Prison Break" sequence with Quicksilver is worth the price of admission alone.

I wish everyone would stop attacking this movie. Those who haven't seen it are guilty of
judging a 2 hour+ film by a trailer? Or someone's word? Go see it, if you're disappointed then
you might enjoy Brett Ratner's "Hercules" or Michael Bay's "Transformers with Marky Mark".

    Nuff Said!

  19. And this is exactly why I won't see this movie. Rogue is my favorite and I absolutely love Anna Paquin. Cutting her from the movie cut my money from their pockets. I won't even purchase it when it comes out on DVD, especially when you can always find the deleted scene online at some point.

  20. well Rogue is a pretty cool character i don't know why Bryan Singer made her character look crappy. they either should not put her in the first place or made her look cool. But in my opinion they should just put another character for the next movie. And Bryan keep up the good work.

  21. They should have never cut Rogue from this movie. Rogue should have been a major story line to this movie for the primary reason that the Super Sentinels of the future could absorb powers. In DOFP they tried to explain that it was Mystique's power that allowed the sentinels to do that, however Mystique's power is ONLY to shape shift, she never had the ability to absorb or manipulate the mutant power of anyone. It would have taken Rogue's power to give the Super Sentinels that power, which ultimately is what made them strong enough to defeat the x-men (in the new DOFP movie).

  22. I'm glad they kept her out. Anna Paquin may "shine" in other roles but in X-Men she's a total drag and COMPLETELY ruins one of the most interesting characters in the series. Rogue was grossly miscast and I would have preferred Rogue be left out altogether than give us this crappy, useless, annoyingly passive character that serves no purpose.

  23. The urgency wouldn't have changed anyway. It was never about how long Kitty could keep him in the past it was about how long she was ABLE to keep him in the past due to the Sentinels impending attack. Yet again another excuse to cover up the complete mess they made of Rouge. They took one of the most beloved characters and ruined her. I am not impressed with any of the x-men movies. They can't even keep a consistent time line through there own movies, yes X3 was a big wrench in things but the other movies aren't consistent either. I just want to see an X-men movies with the badass characters I grew up watching.

  24. I'm glad they kept that out. There was a lot of consistency errors, and having her there like that would have been another. She took the cure in X-Men 3, so according to their timeline, she should be powerless.

  25. They cut Rogue? I'm not even sure I want to see this stupid crap they probably completely screwed up the time line and story of the x-men universe.
The story is probably nothing to do with the 90s fox kids cartoon either with forge , wolverine time traveling and bishop and cable ect.
