While audiences have shown tremendously diverse taste in this new Golden Age Of Television, this year they have firmly voted against music based narratives. HBO‘s “Vinyl” was a high profile flop, with the expensive series receiving harsh notices from critics, and quickly fading interest from audiences. Meanwhile, Netflix‘s “The Get Down” received better reviews, but it was a troubled production, and it left the streaming service to make the uncharacteristic move of splitting the release of the first season (the second half will arrive next year). And it remains to be seen if the show will be renewed for season two. And then, somewhere in between those two shows was Showtime‘s “Roadies,” but it won’t be getting a chance to play another song.

The network has canceled the show after its first season. Starring Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots and more, the show followed the lives of the crew members behind a popular band on tour. And it’s a great premise, particularly given the background of the show’s co-creator Cameron Crowe, but it didn’t seem to spark with critics who were mostly negative on the series, with viewers mostly staying away. Still, Crowe is grateful for what he was able to accomplish. Here’s an excerpt from a blog post on his site, The Uncool, about the end of the series:
My mind is still spinning from the giddy highs of working with this epic cast and crew. Though we could tell a thousand more stories, this run ends with a complete ten-hour tale of music and love. Like a song that slips under your skin, or a lyric that keeps speaking to you, we hope the spell of “Roadies” lingers. It was life-changing experience for all of us.

Well, d*mn.
It was uneven at times and trod awfully close to parody at times, but it had a big enough heart to warrant a second season.
