‘Shoplifters’: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme D’Or Cannes Winner Gets Its First Official Trailer

Winner of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or prize (the Best Picture, essentially) and Japan’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2019 Academy Awards, the first official U.S. trailer for “Shoplifters” is here. And it’s looking like it’s going to be director Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s year. A master empath, a delicate, quiet, humanistic filmmaker of massive emotional depth and inner life, Kore-eda is one of our best filmmaker’s, period. And with “Shoplifters” it appears as though the whole world is going to know it.

Funny, bittersweet and full of life and hardship, “Shoplifters” centers on a family of small-time crooks as they take in a child they find on the street. “Kore-eda takes the time to affectionately dissect the way family functions, before carefully deconstructing it and revealing the contoured complexities that live within,” our review from Cannes wrote. “[His] sensitive eye captures their simple joys, their sorrow, their moments of laughter with warmhearted spontaneity.”

After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them…

Starring Lily Franky, Ando Sakura, Matsuoka Mayu, Jyo Kairi Sasaki Miyu and Kiki Kilin, the veteran Japanese actress who worked with Kore-eda often and passed away just recently (R.I.P.), Magnolia Pictures will release “Shoplifters” in theaters November 23 and is currently playing at the New York Film Festival.
