Remember way back when (like last week) we were excited about Guy Ritchie’s apparent return to form with his upcoming film “Toff Guys?” We hailed it as Ritchie coming back to his crime film roots. Well, it appears that his return to big-budget blockbusters is imminent, as Warner Bros. has announced that a third installment of the director’s “Sherlock Holmes” series will hit theaters in 2020.
No details were given, but it’s safe to assume that the two main stars, Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr., will return as Watson and Holmes, respectively. Also, it’s safe to assume that Ritchie will be behind the camera, as well. While “Sherlock Holmes 3” seems to come from nowhere, there have been plenty of rumblings in the past few years about the possibility of a sequel.

Way back in 2015, Law was talking about a threequel, saying that he even pitched an idea for a time-travel installment of the franchise. Then, in 2016, Ritchie was very diplomatic when asked about said time-travel storyline, basically calling it crap but in the nicest possible way. So, even though it doesn’t appear like time-travel will be at the center of the story, it’ll be interesting to see what the studio has up its sleeve for the new film.
Clearly, Downey is looking for his first big post-‘Avengers 4’ role, and a return to his other well-received franchise seems to be his best bet. The first “Sherlock Holmes” was released in 2009 and shocked everyone as it grossed $524 million worldwide. That was quickly followed up by “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which was released in 2011 and grossed $545 million worldwide. With RDJ’s star power growing exponentially since then, a third “Sherlock Holmes” seems like an excuse to print money for all parties involved.
The as-yet-untitled “Sherlock Holmes 3” will hit theaters Christmas Day 2020.
