Got a Tip?

Shawn Levy To Direct 3D James Cameron-Produced ‘Fantastic Voyage’

Wow, we guess the folks at Fox really like what they’ve been seeing from “Real Steel,” the forthcoming robot boxing movie thingy starring Hugh Jackman.

Deadline reports that the studio has hired ‘Steel’ director Shawn Levy — previously known for shitty comedies like “The Pink Panther” or CGI family films like “Night At The Museum” — to direct the James Cameron-produced 3D tentpole “Fantastic Voyage.” The film has been brewing for a while with a number of directors eyeing the director’s chair including Paul Greengrass, Tarsem, Darren Aronofsky, Jonathan Mostow, Timur Bekmambetov and most recently, Louis Leterrier. The film is a remake of the classic 1966 film about a group of scientists who are miniaturized and sent into a human body in a submarine to remove a blood clot from a colleague’s brain — a scientist who is invaluable to the CIA. And get ready for a digital effects extravaganza, as apparently, once the sub goes inside the body, the entire film will be CGI.

The project has a script by Shane Salerno, with Laeta Kalogridis (“Alexander,” “Shutter Island“) giving it a polish. Fox seems to love being in the Shawn Levy business as they also just tapped him to team again with Hugh Jackman for a movie based on a pitch by “Lost” showrunner Carlton Cuse. No word on which will go first, but with Jackman gearing up for “The Wolverine,” we presume the long-gestating “Fantastic Voyage” will take priority.
