Got a Tip?

Shane Black Takes “Full Responsibility” For ‘The Predator’ Controversy And Is “Deeply Sorry”

As a filmmaker, walking down the red carpet for a screening of your highly-anticipated movie should feel incredible. As the culmination of all your blood, sweat, and tears, you’re finally on the precipice of unleashing the fruits of your labor. But for Shane Black, the recent red carpet for “The Predator” was emotional, but for all the wrong reasons.

In a new interview with the Associated Press, from the red carpet, Black opened up about the recent shitstorm that has engulfed his film, and why he’s “deeply sorry” for causing this much drama. This whole situation started last week when it was reported that “The Predator” star Olivia Munn reported to Fox that a registered sex offender was hired by Black to be in a scene where he overtly hits on the actress’ character. Munn was angered because it appeared that Black was well aware of his friends’ transgressions, and failed to let anyone else know when he was brought on to shoot his cameo.

“I made an error in judgment that’s irresponsible — I’m not just a kid,” he said.

“I was the captain of that ship — it’s my job to make sure that those things don’t happen,” the director continued. “And I failed. And I may have, I did cause pain to people in the cast. That’s unacceptable. I take full responsibility. I am very deeply sorry.”

Black, obviously getting emotional, said, “It really bothers me that this movie, which could have been these beautiful people on a beautiful night with only this, has been overshadowed in some ways by a stupid decision that I made.”

This comes after a week of added controversy as Munn became the only member of the cast to talk about the situation, appearing in interviews by herself (after she claims that other cast members backed out of publicity). The outspoken actress claims that she was told by Fox, after they cut the controversial scene, to just keep it quiet.

“When I did call my costars, I got chastised the next day by the studio for telling them and ‘Why am I just not keeping it quiet? It’s all going to be okay. It got deleted. What’s the big deal?’ And I said, ‘Well, it happened,’” said Munn on Ellen.

“I think that people expected me to be quiet because it’s my movie, but the truth is I don’t care,” she said. “I don’t care if this movie gave me all the money in the world and all the power. If it cost one person’s life, they can take it. I don’t want this career.”

“The Predator” hits theaters tomorrow.
