Got a Tip?

Sequel Talk Begins Swirling For Horror Hit ‘It Follows’

nullA critical smash, one of the best per-screen averages for a horror film since "Paranormal Activity," and a sensation that has managed to ride buzz since it premiered at Cannes in 2014, hits like "It Follows" don’t come along every day. And naturally, distributors Radius-TWC want to keep a good thing going — yes, they are thinking of a sequel.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but we’ve thought about it,” the company’s co-president Tom Quinn told EW. What would it be about? Well, apparently ideas are already being tossed around, but he serves up this tease: “Flip the title. There’s so much you could do.”

So, "Follow It"? Sounds like an interesting reversal and certainly one that could work, bringing a fresh approach instead of just going over familiar ground. But the key, of course, is writer/director David Robert Mitchell, who isn’t opposed to it, and in fact has some ideas he couldn’t use the first time around that he could bring back.

"…I don’t know that a sequel would be the next thing that I would do, but I’m certainly open to it. I just kinda want to see how things play out," he told Vulture. "But I do want to say that when I wrote this, I had some bigger setpieces, a few things that I sort of simplified, and some stuff that we chose to cut out because of the budget and time, so there’s all kinds of fun things that could be done with this concept and story."

So, is "It Follows" a little horror gem that should be left alone, or is there room to grow? Let us know below.

  1. I see some people whining about how there should NEVER be a sequel. I strongly disagree! This movie was amazing. The concept is extremely original and exciting, the entity is creepy as hell and has great potential for many sequels without becoming boring or used up. Oh, and the soundtrack was iconic, original and amazing! I would love sequels with similar soundtracks!

  2. Sequels tend to be tricky to make work, especially in the horror genre. The sequels that do work are the ones that add a whole new dimension to the film (sometimes literally – Insidious Chapter 2).
I think the potential It follows sequel should can go one of two ways to be successful. 1, they need to use a completely different set of people with maybe one of the characters from the first as the film opener. Or 2(SLIGHT SPOILER), shift point of view and follow another character such as Paul (I think that\’s his name) from after his direct contact with "It". In the film we saw nothing happen, that doesn\’t mean nothing did…

  3. Now lets look at paranormal
Activity for a minute, the first one, brilliant! Blew people away. Second one, still pretty good, third, ok, fourth still
Ok and fifth had us all asking how deep are they gonna run this into the ground? Like step up, some movies just need to
Know when its over. The money, i get thats what its about but sometimes a sequel isnt the best idea unless you put your heart into it and make sure that its for us not for the money. We loved this movie. Its really a true gem. The scoring, and the un-clicheness of it is trueley amazing. The writers, director and actors i tip my hat to you for putting together something that could be an instang classic, just be careful about making a sequel. Or else not only did you make us upset, you tainted the first ones brilliance.

  4. This is 1 of the few horror movies that deserves a sequel. For a film with such a limited budget and no stars (though Maika Monroe is on the fast track now) it did well to entertain and scare. Also there are many options for plot direction. Due to the fact that the monster is largely a mystery the audience can only guess how the protagonists can battle it and that\’s what really can drive a sequel. My hope is that the studio heads and writers collaborate on something as refreshing as \”It Follows.\” I, for one, truly enjoyed it as the film reminded me of an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker where people where being murdered by a creature that turned out to be the incarnation of a Rakshasa, a blood thirsty creature of Indian folklore.
