Got a Tip?

A Second ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel From George R.R. Martin Is Coming

Game Of Thrones” is over, but hit intellectual property never sleeps. HBO has another “Game Of Thrones” spin-off in the works, it’s past the development stage and the cable channel is close to ordering a pilot episode. The spin-off, another prequel, would focus on House Targaryen, the race that begat Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen Queen character. Moreover, of much importance to fans, the prequel— set 300 years before the events of the flagship series that tracks the beginnings and the end of House Targaryen—come from “Game Of Thrones” author and mastermind George R.R. Martin.

Ryan Condal (“Colony”) and Martin will pen the script for the drama, which is based on the latter’s ‘Fire & Blood’ according to THR. News of a second ‘GOT’ spin-off, clears up some confusion. When HBO first announced the development of four, then five spin-offs, several years ago, big names like Max Borenstein (“Kong: Skull Island”), Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland (“LA Confidential”) and “Game Of Thrones” writer Bryan Cogman, were announced as some of the writers. Then, a few months later, HBO chief Casey Bloys announced that only one “Game Of Thrones” spin-off had been greenlit and the rest were scrapped.

That untitled show became the prequel coming from “Kingsmanwriter Jane Goldman starring Naomi Watts that may arrive sometime in 2020. It’s set thousands of years before the events of the current series and it’s been referred to as “The Long Night.” However, in spring of this year, just as “Game Of Thrones” was ending, Martin said, actually, three shows were still alive and still in development.

Given his job as author, not TV cable exec, many, including us, assumed Martin was wrong or talking out of his corncob pipe, but clearly the reveal of a second show demonstrates the ‘GOT’ creator is in the know. Now one has to wonder if a third show will eventually be announced too.

THR says that this new ‘House Of Targaryen’ is a newer version of the idea that was originally being developed by the aforementioned Cogman (who’s perhaps fittingly, gone on to help the “Lord Of The Rings” series over at Amazon Studios).

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are attached as exec producers to all things “Game of Thrones” but are not actively involved in any of them. Instead, they are developing a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films over at Lucasfilm and also have signed a massively lucrative deal over at Netflix that should occupy them for the next few years.
