It has been an incredible year for singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten, particularly when it comes to Peak TV. In addition to scoring the film “Strange Weather,” she performed “Tarifa” on “Twin Peaks: The Return,” delivered her cover of Skeeter Davis‘ “The End of the World” for “The Man In The High Castle,” and made her acting debut in Netflix’s surprise hit “The OA.” Now Van Etten is going back to where it all began with the deluxe reissue of her debut album, (it was) because i was in love.
The powerful collection of songs brought Van Etten deserved acclaim, providing a tremendous showcase for her songwriting and unforgettable voice. Todaym, we’re proud to exclusively debut the music video for “I Wish I Knew” and “Keep,” directed by Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene“), who previously collaborated with Van Etten on the video for “Your Love Is Killing Me.” This time around, he’s kept things simple for “I Wish I Knew” (which Van Etten performed on “The OA”) and “Keep,” by capturing the artist playing live.
“I wanted to do something really simple here, to approach it like a portrait and capture a very intimate, stripped down performance. I love these songs and I was excited by the idea of Sharon revisiting them almost a decade after writing them,” Durkin explained. “She had told me stories about playing them at open mics and small venues when she was starting out. We wanted to create something that would tap into those early experiences and be a personal reflection of the work at that time in contrast to what the songs mean to her now. I felt that a single take where she is playing for herself, not for camera or an audience, but just being present, in the moment, and in her element, was the best and way to get inside the performance.”
The deluxe reissue of (it was) because i was in love is available on November 17th as a Vinyl Me Please exclusive and via Sharon Van Etten’s online shop. It will be available digitally everywhere. Recorded by Greg Weeks, who co-produced alongside Van Etten, the reissue has been remixed by Craig Silvey, remastered by Joe Lambert and includes deluxe vinyl packaging with new artwork and liner notes, as well as two bonus tracks.
