“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” was one of the panels on a lot of people’s list for things to see during this year’s Comic-Con.
First, we were given a behind-the-scenes piece on “Scott Pilgrim,” ending with director Edgar Wright stepping on stage. Before he made any introductions he went off a little about his great love for “Scott Pilgrim,” the graphic novel. “The first time I heard of Scott Pilgrim — well it was during my ‘Shaun of the Dead‘ tour. When I saw it, it was love at first sight.”
Wright went on to bring out each person with their own video introduction, starting with the “Scott Pilgrim” creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Then as the others started to make their way in, the panel took an interesting and fan-worthy turn when Wright announced Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on to the stage, only to announce they were not appearing in “Scott Pilgrim.” Simon Pegg walked away pretty sad-looking, sliding away with his head down. If there was ever a perfect moment to kick up the sad Charlie Brown music, it was then.
Then things got a little stranger when Michael Cera showed up, playing up on the little ‘joke’ that he auditioned for Captain America. He went onstage in a muscle-padded Captain America outfit on, mask and all, to the delight of the fans in Hall H roaring with applause.
After that, the audience was presented with a clip of the film as Scott (Cera) makes his way over towards Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman), wanting to fight him for Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). It was a pretty cool sequence, especially with the Sword of Love that Cera used in it. As soon as that piece was finished, it was on to the question and answer section with the audience.
Of course, with Cera being interviewed left and right, the question of the “Arrested Development” movie came up. All he could muster was, “I don’t have any information. I want it to happen, I think it’s going to.”
Wright was asked about the particular video-game style of the fights that Scott must face against with Ramona’s seven evil exes. “Yes, we wanted the different levels of fights to be like levels in a video game. The idea was to make it feel like that. It’s kind of inspired by that. You can hear sound effects in it and you can hear the familiar sounds from video games.”
A majority of the cast was posed with the question about the pressure of being in a comic book film like Scott Pilgrim. Ellen Wong replied, “I was nervous but getting to meet and work with this amazing cast you guys made going to work so much fun. It was an experience like no other, thanks guys.”
One of the last questions was about what the actors’ favorite parts of the movie were. Mae Whitman said, “There is this part where I first come up to Mr. Cera. I did it with a southern accent and it doesn’t make any sense but it makes me laugh.”
“There is a scene where we are on the couch where we are squaring off with Scott and Ramona. Aubrey [Plaza] has some really funny lines talking about New York and I cracked up quite a bit with that. So that was kind of funny for me. My favorite moment was the dust and the cleaning lady conversation,” replied Brandon Routh.
