Legacy sequels seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays, especially in the realm of horror. We’re about to see the release of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” on Netflix, which is hoping to do what “Halloween” (2018) did several years ago. And earlier this year, we saw “Scream” become a bit of a sleeper hit at the box office and with fans, reinvigorating yet another horror franchise with the help of a new generation of actors combining forces with old favorites. Now, thanks to “Scream” earning more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, it appears Spyglass and Paramount are ready for another entry in the franchise.

According to the studio, based on the success of the new “Scream,” everyone is reuniting to bring another addition to the franchise to the public. No title was given for the new “Scream” sequel, but filming is expected to begin this summer with Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli–Olpin and Tyler Gillett) attached to produce and direct and James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will co-write the script. (As for titles, our own resident “Scream” expert and Playlist Podcast co-host, Mike DeAngelo, is hoping for “Scream Too.”)
“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes and Kevin so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the ‘Scream’ saga to life,” said Radio Silence.

Vanderbilt and Busick added, “Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the ‘Scream’ story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor.”
It’s unclear how the story will continue, as “Scream” (2022) introduced a couple of new leading ladies with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Obviously, you would assume that some of the other cast will return along with the legacy characters. The ones who survived, that is.
With production expected to begin this summer, it’s quite possible we could be seeing the next “Scream” film in early 2023, only a year removed from the recent release. Obviously, no one wants to rest on their laurels, huh?
