“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” is usually considered one of the best video game movies ever made because of how well it translated that medium into a film, despite being based on a comicbook. But the film is not often discussed in the context of anime, as the original comicbook was made in the style of Japanese manga. The colors, over-the-top action, visual sound effects, it all looks like it could be coming from a “Scott Pilgrim” anime that never was — but could still be, if Edgar Wright has his way.
Ahead of the film’s 10th anniversary, writer-director Edgar Wright and most of the cast came together for a new oral history of the film over at EW to discuss the making of and the legacy of “Scott Pilgrim.” Though the film wasn’t a huge success in theaters, it quickly became a cult favorite, with fans that have longed for a sequel for years.
Of course, a live-action sequel is probably not going to happen, but it doesn’t mean that all hope is gone. In the same piece by EW, Edgar Wright revealed that he’s had plans to move the “Scott Pilgrim” story to the animation medium.
“There’s some plans—and there’s nothing official yet—but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way,” Wright said. “We’ve been talking with [Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator] and with [Jared LeBoff, executive producer] for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.”

Of course, it’s important to note that Wright said “there’s nothing official yet,” and it may very well never happen. But it does feel like the natural place to explore more stories in the “Scott Pilgrim” universe. After all, the film has already been animated before, both for the “Scott Pilgrim” video game, and for a short on Adult Swim.
