It’s been a pretty good year for horror movies with audiences able to turn to both indies like “The Witch” and mainstream fare such as “Don’t Breathe” to get their fix. And one movie that’s already primed to cause a stir in 2017 is “Raw,” especially if the reception on the festival circuit across this summer and fall is any indication. Bursting out of the gate at Cannes Critics’ Week and then reportedly causing people to faint at TIFF, “Raw” has been turning heads, and now you’ll get a taste of what it’s all about with the first trailer.
Directed by Julia Ducournau, and starring Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, and Rabah Nait Oufella, the story centers on a vegetarian teenager whose first taste of meat leads to some bloody life changes. Here’s the official synopsis:
Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At sixteen she’s a brilliant student starting out at veterinary school where she experiences a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her family principles and eats RAW meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge…
“Raw” will screen at Sundance next month before opening on March 10, 2017.
