While many are excited to see director Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man“) return to the superhero genre with “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” releasing this week, the film also allows him to play in the realm of horror. It’s been more than a decade since Raimi has really tapped into horror filmmaking in a serious way. While many are curious about his future making comic book movies, the director is apparently also interested in making a smaller genre project.
Raimi spoke with SlashFilm and in their interview, they asked Raimi if he would ever consider making another film the size of the Cate Blanchett supernatural crime thriller “The Gift” or similar to his more notable flick “Evil Dead.”
“I like them all actually. Each presents its own unique challenges to the filmmaker and each is incredibly satisfying. I wouldn’t want to go back to the budget of the first ‘Evil Dead.’ I mean, that was brutal. That was extremely difficult. But I would like to make something the size of “The Gift” or ‘A Simple Plan,” those smaller budget movies that are just about the characters and thrills. An intense little horror movie would be great.”
“The Gift” is arguably one of Raimi’s better films and alongside “Elizabeth,” helped boost the career of Blanchett as the Aussie actress was just starting out in Hollywood before exploding thanks to “Lord of The Rings.” It helps that the tone of “The Gift” skews more noir/thriller. While the filmmaker is likely known for his humor, that dark serious side of his work is very impressive as well.
Raimi’s horror-comedy “Drag Me To Hell” was certainly an attempt to make something in the vein of “Evil Dead” again but didn’t exactly connect with audiences. Unless he’s super excited about something else with that sort of tone, it sounds like Raimi is more interested in serious/grounded projects within the horror genre, and that’s just fine by us.
“Doctor Strange 2” will be in theaters on May 6.
