Got a Tip?

Ryan Reynolds Scores The Green Lantern Gig

Well, this probably means the “Deadpool,” spin-off is dead, so maybe we should be thankful for small miracles.

Ryan Reynolds has scored the coveted the Green Lantern gig besting “The Hangover” actor Bradley Cooper and pop sensation Justin Timberlake, who was probably the outside shot given he’s never led a movie, let alone a $150 million-plus one.

If we woulda put money down on this one we would have lost. We honestly thought Cooper was going to take it. Especially because most indications of “Green Lantern,” said that the film was going to take on a “Iron Man”-like humorous tone and Cooper’s the better man for that job. Or at least in our minds he is (sure, Galifinakis stole, ‘Hangover,’ but it was Cooper that nearly stole, “Wedding Crashers.”).

Martin Campbell is still directing and maybe the decision came down to him preferring the actor? Production is supposed to start in January. The script was written by Greg Berlanti with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, probably a draft far, far away from the one we read ages ago, but that version was written by the same three scribes. 1. wha—huh?? Cooper is funnier than Reynolds? Cooper is good at playing fratty douchebags but Reynolds has got the better comic timing and the sarcasm that would be comparable to Downey's Iron Man performance. Plus, JT and Cooper have never headed big movies either, so not sure what you're getting at. If anything Reynolds has more blockbuster experience than both of them. Probably better he does this over Deadpool seeing as that project is still at Fox.

  2. Will this movie really cost in the $150 million dollar range? Even $100 million seems like it would be too much.
Was the script "The Playlist" read a good one? Is it worth all the attention?

  3. SK, we have a script review in our archives. It was… a'ight.

I don't necessarily understand how this kills the Deadpool movie. If he shoots Lantern in January (it comes out in 2011), he can jump right into Deadpool in mid-late-'10, which is when a green light was going to happen anyway.

  4. Thanks, just read your review of the script.
If the movie is in a lighter tone like Iron Man or even Star Trek, with the slapstick-type comedy, then Reynolds isn't a bad choice. He'd probably fair well, better than the Deadpool character, and like Roberty Downey Jr. in Iron Man. I'm not saying he'll be as good, but he should be decent.
I know nothing of the Green Lantern universe so like most people would wait for a trailer before deciding either way.
Is Green Lantern on the same level of character as Iron Man (B-level)?

  5. I think I have to agree with The Playlist on this one as Marvel seems to lean towards a sense of continuity and being Deadpool has been killed off on X-Men Origins: Wolverine it would be rather strange to have the same actor appear in two major gigs.

I would have picked Cooper but I'm still interested to see where this one goes…

  6. Actually Lantern's popularity has skyrocketed in the last few years thanks to writer Geoff Johns and his book is now one of if not the top selling book in the industry.

  7. And to the general populace Lantern is definitely a B character. But then again, so was Iron Man and look how that turned out. As Anne Thompson says, the same result could happen, but everything needs to go right and Reynolds is no RDJ, not by a long shot.

  8. That Superman cameo would definitely put alot of asses in seats. If WB is smart they'll do it. Renew Brandon Routh or maybe finally give Henry Cavill a freakin job.
