The Russo Brothers Agree With Anthony Mackie’s Marvel Studios Diversity Criticism: “He’s Not Wrong At All”

Hollywood has been trying to change its image in recent years when it comes to diversity and inclusivity. Just a decade ago, it was clear that white male filmmakers and actors had the upper hand when it comes to studio films. And though that’s still the case, there have been changes that have been positive. But Anthony Mackie wants to see more and he made that abundantly clear in a recent interview. And Joe and Anthony Russo, aka The Russo Brothers, agree.

Speaking to MovieMaker, the Russo Brothers were asked about Mackie’s recent comments that were critical of Marvel Studios and its lack of diversity. And while the Russos aren’t the foremost voices on Black Lives Matter or the current racial issues plaguing the system, the filmmakers agree with Mackie’s assessment.

“I think we can always all do better at diversity, constantly in this business, and in every facet of every industry — so he’s not wrong at all,” said Joe Russo. “I think that we all have to work harder to keep endorsing and supporting diversity on both sides of the camera.”

Anthony Russo added, “We have a ton of respect for Anthony Mackie. He is not only an amazing actor, but he’s an amazing person, and we’ve loved our collaboration with him.”

When it was reported that Mackie was critical of Marvel’s diversity, fans were a bit shocked. Mainly, this happened because the headlines read that Mackie was somehow bashing Marvel for their lack of diversity. But as the Russos said, it’s not so much about the lack of diversity being a problem specific to Marvel Studios, but in Hollywood in general, especially on blockbuster films. And It’s clear that Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel are working to correct this, with more diverse and inclusive hiring during the upcoming Phase 4.

So, Mackie is just using his power and position to point out a flaw within the company he works for to help further the cause for diverse voices. As Joe Russo said, he’s not wrong and he’s showing why he is up to the task of carrying the Captain America mantle from Chris Evans.
