Oscar winner Russell Crowe will receive the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The award-winning actor and director will also show off his musical talents with his band Indoor Garden Party, which will perform at the festival’s opening night concert on June 30th.
Since making his film debut in 1990, Crowe has starred in over fifty films, including Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” which earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. Crowe has also directed two films, 2014’s “The Water Diviner” and the 2022 thriller “Poker Face“. In his latest film “The Pope’s Exorcist” from director Julius Avery, Crowe stars as the real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth.
In a special screening celebrating Crowe’s achievements, Karlovy Vary will present a twenty year anniversary screening of Peter Weir’s adventure film “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), which won two Oscars (Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing), from 10 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and earned Crowe a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Captain Aubrey.
Along with his many credits as an actor and director, Crowe has been performing music since the 1980s. His rock band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts released three albums. In 2005, he began working with the Canadian musician Alan Doyle under the band name The Ordinary Fear of God. The duo now perform under the moniker Indoor Garden Party.
Previous recipients of Crystal Globe include Geoffrey Rush, Michael Caine, Richard Gere, and Isabelle Huppert.
The 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival runs from June 30th through July 8th, 2023.
