The streaming services are attempting to make the best of this pandemic situation. With people stuck inside and production on films and TV series seemingly on hold, for the time being, streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Disney+, and Amazon are doing everything in their power to make sure they have content to push out to the masses. And for many, that means purchases the distribution rights to films that were originally scheduled to hit theaters, such as “Run Sweetheart Run.”

According to Deadline, Amazon has purchased the distribution rights for the new Blumhouse film, “Run Sweetheart Run,” with the idea being that the film will now forgo theaters and go directly to the Prime Video streaming service. As you might expect from the Blumhouse label, “Run Sweetheart Run” is firmly in the low-budget thriller category. The film tells the story of a woman that finds herself in the middle of a cat and mouse game as she attempts to flee from a blind date.
The thriller was expected to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March, but due to COVID-19, that event was canceled. Then when theaters were shutdown, a May release date for the feature was quickly canceled, as well, leaving the film without a distribution strategy. Enter Amazon.
The new film stars Ella Balinska, Pilou Asbæk, Aml Ameen, Dayo Okeniyi, Betsy Brandt, Clark Gregg, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. “Run Sweetheart Run” is written and directed by Shana Feste, who is probably best known for her work on films such as “Country Strong,” “Endless Love,” and most recently, “Boundaries.”
“As crazy as audiences may find the film protagonist’s experience, I wrote and directed a film that is based on a very personal story for me and I’m thrilled that a global audience will have the chance to see it soon on Amazon Prime,” said Feste. “I’m also grateful to my friends at Universal and Blumhouse for their unending support of the film.”
Producer Jason Blum added, “Shana is a supremely talented writer and director, and we were fortunate to collaborate with her to help bring her vision to fruition. I’m thrilled that movie-loving audiences around the world will get to see the film soon.”
“Run Sweetheart Run,” as mentioned, was expected to make its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, but now, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video. A release date has not been announced.
