Geez, Marvel‘s Phase Two is barely underway and we’re already rumor-mongering about Phase Three. Such is the internet these days we suppose. With “Doctor Strange” essentially confirmed as being in the playbook for Marvel’s third wave of comic book movies, chatter continues about who will take on the mighty mantle. Back in the spring, it was Justin Theroux who was said to be in consideration but now a starrier name is being mentioned, if there’s any veracity to this latest bit of news.
Latino Review reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is now being tossed around the Marvel water-cooler as the ideal choice to play the character. But as they rightly note, “Levitt and his team are probably unaware,” because we can’t imagine this isn’t merely some white-boarded ideas for now. Of course, the actor has done the comic book/franchise thing twice previously, playing John Blake in “The Dark Knight Rises” (WORLDS COLLIDING!) and Cobra Commander in the first “G.I. Joe” movie. But will he want to dance in the Marvel world for probably meagre pay particularly as his own directing career is taking flight? (JGL’s “Don Jon” opens this fall).
Guess we’ll find out. But what do you think? Is he the right guy for the part, a total fantasy or should Marvel be looking elsewhere?
Bryan Cranston…
Fresh from his critically acclaimed role on "Breaking Bad" he has the talent and recognition needed to carry the role. Also most important, having never played the lead in a major movie and coming off a long stint on a cable network, Marvel can get him cheap…
I am so done with these bullshit comicbook movies.
Hollywood messes up EVERYTHING.
Are you kidding me!?
what the heck these guys are smoking?
heck I'll pick Pierce Brosnan and he's 6'2 tall
Jason Gordon Levitt is an awesome actor don't get me wrong but he's too young to play the role as Doctor Strange. And as a gamer I i'll pick
Gordon Levitt to perfectly play Max Payne as the way the original game was made because of the looks and the sarcasm 😉
What about Colin Farrell?
NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Worst idea ever. Why does anyone cast him in anything, he's SOOO terrible.
Terrible choice. Stephen Strange is one of the best untapped characters in Marvel Universe, with real gravitas and world-weary mystery that only comes with age. Viggo Mortensen, Clive Owen, Liam Neeson, Benico del Toro, Idris Elba — even with makeup Gordon Levitt is still a boy.
NO NO NO NO NO. Was that clear? I thought they were working on getting liam neeson? JGL is way too young and feminine looking to be the sorcerer supreme, wizend yet not old please.
JGL already turned them down for Guardians of the Galaxy. What Marvel wants and what the reality is are often different. Don't read too much into want or offer stories.
JGL is totally the wrong choice for Doctor Strange – far too much of an boy-man from next door to play an occultist who has gazed into alien dimensions.
Viggo Mortensen?
JGL should stick to either directing himself or getting directed by Nolan. Definitely don't enter the Marvel universe, which is starting to seriously bloat
Timothy Olyphant would be the better choice.
horrible idea. Doctor Strange looks like a man, not a teenager. Johnny Depp physically with the moustache and soul patch is a better match, but only is Depp plays him straight up and doesn't try to do his quirky reinterpretation crap.
And lets be real, Doctor Strange isn't really an exciting or cool Marvel character. How about a Namor movie?
Get someone the right age. Like between 35 and 45/50. Timothy Olyphant would be interesting!
I like JGL. If they won't get Johnny Depp, he'll do.
If they're making Doctor Strange their new "Iron Man" as RDJ fades out, then JGL will definitely be getting paid.
Oh gawd, I'd rather have someone stab me in the eyes for two-and-a-half hours…
