Got a Tip?

Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire To Star In Remake Of Carol Reed’s ‘Third Man’?

We don’t put much stock frankly, into this new rumor making the rounds that says Leonard DiCaprio and BFF Tobey Maguire will star in a remake of Carol Reed’s British noir-classic, “The Third Man,” which is evidently being written by “Eastern Promises” screenwriter Steven Knight.

“The Third Man” is an all-timer and pitted real-life pals Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten against each other in a thriller about a man who visits Vienna for a job on the behest of a best friend, only to find that the buddy was killed under mysterious circumstances upon his arrival.

So yeah, we don’t buy it, but hey, we’re in the mood for making fun photoshop graphics tonight, so why not. Update: Also, note: The Criterion Collection no longer has the rights to “Third Man,” on regular DVD and Blu-Ray and the discs have gone out of print, effective immediately. Scoop ’em up while you can now because the studio version obviously will not be as lovingly rendered.

  1. Better a remake of 'The Third Man' than 'The A-Team' or 'Get Smart' or some other shit.

I'm honestly not too familiar with classic films, so this rumour has made me aware of this film and I'm looking forward to checking it out in the future.

If it gets remade, what can we do?. At least it won't be tax dollars making it. Those who already know about the original will always have the original. And a remake will likely draw in some new audiences to the original.
And again, what would you rather see, this remake or 'The A-Team'?

If the remake is decent, then I'm sure it will be a suitable compliment to the original.
Much like how 'Infernal Affairs' and 'The Departed' are very similar and only a few years apart, but 'The Departed' is the start and end of the discussion here in the US for the most part.

  2. Lol, I'm actually planning on checking it out this weekend (in case the remake news is true and spoilers end up littering plot descriptions of the movie and message boards).

You guys should do a post on some classic films. Much like the "actors likely to win oscars" lists. Even a list with minimal explanations would be really useful and worthwhile.

I mean Harvey has already had plenty of face time on the site, and I'm sure a noticeable percentage of your readers (like me) heard about it for the first time then with RDJ, Tom Hanks and Spielberg being mentioned.

  3. Doing a feature of classic films feels slightly odd to me cause it would probably contain hundreds of films.

But it sounds like you should watch TCM for a few years straight if you're serious.

Here's some ideas though, but many modern-foreign classics in here too.

Lastly, why remake a perfect film? Why not remake a film that on paper was awesome, the premise was excellent, but something went awry? That seems like the missed opportunity of remakes and really if you took strong source material that was a mediocre movie, one could end up looking a lot better.
