‘RRR’: Director S.S. Rajamouli Is Currently Developing A “Fantastic Idea” For A Sequel To His Action Epic

One of global cinema’s big surprises in 2022 was S.S. Rajamouli‘s Indian action epic “RRR.  It’s the most expensive Indian film to date, with a budget of $72 million, and won over critics and audiences worldwide on its way to grossing $175 million worldwide. And thanks to Netflix‘s distribution, it reached even more viewers on streaming.

With a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film and making the National Board Of Review‘s list of best films of the year, it’s time for Rajamouli to start thinking about a sequel. Is it in the cards? According to Deadline, all signs point to yes. In a new interview, Rajamouli revealed he indeed has an idea for a follow-up to “RRR,” but it’s still in the development process. “Whenever a film succeeds, as writers, me, my father, my cousin, we sit and we discuss whether it can be taken forward,” Rajamouli told Deadline. “We usually have some good ideas because we’re high on the success of the film. The same thing happened with “RRR.” There were some good ideas, but not a compelling one.”

But it wasn’t until Rajamouli toured the United States promoting the film that a truly great idea arose for a sequel. “Then, after coming to the U.S. and seeing the reaction, I was talking about my experiences to my father, and suddenly my cousin came up with an idea,” Rajamouli continued. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is a great idea — this has to be developed into a script!’ So, I asked my father to write a script based on that fantastic idea, and now he’s in the process of developing it. Once it becomes a full script, we’ll look into how to take it forward.”

Does the new film idea involve the same characters? “Definitely the same characters,” confirms Rajamouli, “but at this point in time, I can’t reveal anything more. But definitely the same characters, yes.” Set in the 1920s, “RRR” tells the epic action-adventure of two real-life revolutionaries (N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan) and their fictional friendship as they fight against the British Raj. The film also stars Aja DevgnAlia BhattShriya SaranSamuthirakani, and Ray Stevenson.

If “RRR” notches some wins during awards season this winter, count on S.S. Rajamouli making his sequel sooner rather than later. Catch the film on Netflix or another streaming service now.
