And the hits just keep on coming for Rooney Mara. Just a day after she signed up for a role in Spike Jonze's untitled upcoming movie, she's now landed another project that will find the actress at the front and center of a big league book adaptation.
THR reports that Mara will star in "Brooklyn," an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Colm Toibin that has none other than Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity," "About A Boy," "An Education") penning the screenplay. The story follows Ellis Lacey, a young Irish woman in the 1950s who is unable to find work at home and is presuaded by Father Flood to emigrate to New York. Her initial stint in the Big Apple is dry, as her life revolves around work in a department store, night school for bookkeeping and she is confined by the strict rules of the boarding house in which she lives. She soon falls in love with an Italian plumber, but a letter from back home changes her life all over again.
The project is moving along with a planned spring 2013 shoot. All told, another feather in Mara's impressive cap which is looking like this: Fincher –> Soderbergh –> Jonze –> Malick –> to this project. Not a bad run at all.
Then she has booked everything including Ben Foster et Casey Affleck just now. ;p
alas, the female lead of this wonderful story has been miscast. this is not the type of Irish woman that thousands of Italian men have fallen for. but as there's not an Italian in sight of the project this is to be understood…not to mention great agenting that must have gone on… to say the least.
the great news however is that the a film of the book is being made and that in Hornby's hands the screenplay will be amazing.
Falls in love with an Italian plumber? Ah ha! It's really a Mario adaptation. Nice try, synopsis. You almost had me fooled.
lol what if someone like Scorsese or Mike Nichols signed up to direct this? She'd have to retire because that streak of awesome directors is too crazy to ignore. Then there's the question of who's going to do the other 2 Dragon Tattoo movies…
THR doesn't say Chaumeil is directing this movie, only that he's directing A Long Way Down. Deadline says they're still looking for a director.
Failed to mention the mess that was Tanner Hall.
