A little under two years ago, the world watched in wonder as a group of divers successfully saved the lives of a group of young soccer players that were trapped in a cave during a monsoon. The entire event took over two weeks and cost the lives of two divers. However, the rescue became global news and has apparently inspired a new film from director Ron Howard.
According to Deadline, Howard is set to direct a film titled “Thirteen Lives” that retells the story of the Tham Luang cave rescue. The drama is set to be written by William Nicholson, the Oscar-nominated writer of “Gladiator,” as well as films such as “Unbroken” and “Everest.” As mentioned, the film is a dramatic retelling of the events from 2018 and is the subject of intense bidding between studios hoping to land the project.
Howard’s most recent film is the 2018 “Star Wars” spin-off ‘Solo.’ However, before that he’s probably best known for winning the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for “A Beautiful Mind,” as well as other films such as “Apollo 13,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and “Frost/Nixon.” His next film is the adaptation of the novel “Hillbilly Elegy,” which stars Glenn Close, Amy Adams, and Haley Bennett.

“Thirteen Lives” is far from the only film in the works about the Tham Luang cave rescue. In addition to Howard’s film, Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi (the filmmakers behind “Free Solo”) have signed on to direct a film about the same subject for Universal.
There’s no release date set for “Thirteen Lives.”
