Got a Tip?

Roberto Orci Exits ‘Star Trek 3,’ Edgar Wright On Shortlist To Take Over

Star Trek Into Darkness Edgar WrightRobert Orci seems to be bailing on three-quels. Over the summer, he exited his producing/writing job on "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," saying quite simply, “I’m not officially involved in it." But that was cool, because a few months earlier he landed the gig helming "Star Trek 3," taking over for J.J. Abrams, who turned his attention to "Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens." Well, it looks like he’s out of that franchise too.

Deadline reports that Orci has exited the director’s chair, but will stay on to produce. So who will take over? According to the trade, Edgar Wright is on the shortlist, and that’s not much of a surprise. The filmmaker famously directed a single shot in "Star Trek Into Darkness," so he’s dipped his toes, ever so slightly, into that world. And frankly, Paramount could use a name to inspire the faithful, particularly after Abrams’ dismal ‘STID.’

Surely more names will crop up, as these kinds of things usually do. But will Wright be willing to step back in to the hysteria of blockbuster moviemaking after getting his heart broken by Marvel with "Ant-Man"? And what’s going on with "Baby Driver," which was on the fast-track to be Wright’s next film?

  1. This is great great news BTW. Don\’t know about the screenplay but Wright might decide on liking it or not. I don\’t think he can write a new one in time for the 2016 release…right?

  2. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are two idiots who don\’t have any writing or directing skills whatsoever. JJ Abrams is always a big disappointment as he proved in Lost and STID. But I\’m fine with Star Wars because George Lucas already ruined it. fortunately Star Trek finally got rid of those guys completely (I hope).
