You would think with two movies coming this year — “Machete Kills” and “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” — that would be more than enough on Robert Rodriguez‘s plate. But that would be to misunderstand the work ethic of the filmmaker, who always seems to be juggling a half dozen different things at any given moment, so even while he’s got two features arriving within a month of each other, he’s already looking toward the small screen for yet another venture.
Univision announced today that Rodriguez is expanding “From Dusk Till Dawn” into a TV show, which is pretty surprising stuff. We wonder if the Weinsteins are involved in any capacity, considering they bought back to the rights to the franchise a few years ago, and not exactly sure who the audience is for this (even among the Rodriguez/Tarantino canon, it’s pretty minor), but it’s another outlet for Rodriguez’s pulp and genre fare. The original 1996 saw two criminals square off against vampires when they hole up in a Mexican bar after pulling off a job.
It was a modestly successful and entertaining movie (Tarantino’s acting aside), enough that two cheapie, non-Rodriguez affiliated direct-to-video sequels were churned out in 1999 — “From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money” and “From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter” — but the series was pretty much toast by this point. (Oh, there was a 2001 PC game you probably forgot about too). But it seems Rodriguez wants to get freaky again, so we’ll see how this goes.
He’s also got second untitled action series developing at Univision too, with powerhouse producers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci backing that. No details on that one either, but there is no stopping Rodriguez. Both shows will air on the El Rey Network, which launches later this year. [Deadline]
