Robert Rodriguez Teams With Diego Boneta For Apple TV Series ‘El Gato Negro’

Apple TV+ may not be premiering until November, but that small detail isn’t stopping the service from rolling out an impressive list of titles and getting even more prepped. Add Robert Rodriguez and Diego Boneta to an already packed lineup of influential figures with the announcement of “El Gato Negro.”The series, a full-fledged comic book adaptation, seems to have everything the director would want from a project.

While breaking the story, The Hollywood Reporter described Richard Dominguez’s source material as something that “centered on the intergenerational exploits of two crime-fighting heroes in South Texas.” When it comes to Boneta’s place in the series, it only stands to reason that the rest of THR’s synopsis might just hold a clue. “The first hero was a young man who takes up the mantle of a fabled local hero to avenge the death of his best friend while the other was his grandfather, a Lucha (Mexican wrestler) who turned to crime-busting decades earlier.”

Film may be Rodriguez’s playground, but he’s already made many successful moves into the world of TV. His network, El Rey, has been instrumental in developing not only projects for independent filmmakers, but properties that give Latin voices a home. His ambitious series based on. “From Dusk till Dawn” shows that he is more than capable of delivering the entertaining content that services crave. “Sin City” and its sequel “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” only cements his status for giving graphic novels their due. Together, the elements prove to be a potent combination.

While Rodriguez is more well known among filmgoers, Boneta may not be as much of a household name. All that could change well before ‘Gato Negro’ sees the light of day thanks to upcoming roles in “Terminator: Dark Fate” and “Monster Hunter.” According to THR, Boneta was active in shopping the project around to various studios and services; none was eager to move on the property until Eric Carrasco cracked the code for a viable pitch.
