Got a Tip?

Robert Pattinson Takes Over For Colin Farrell In David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’

We have to admit, our first words upon hearing this were: “What the shit?” Haters gonna hate, but like it or not, Robert Pattinson is in a position to get things green lit, as he is taking over for Colin Farrell in David Cronenberg‘s “Cosmopolis.”

Based on Don DeLillo‘s book of the same name, the film follows 24 hours in the life of a newly married billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) as he cheats on his wife, is pursued by a stalker, gets attacked by a protester and gradually loses his entire fortune over the course of a single day. The adaptation was penned by Cronenberg himself and cast is currently rounded out by Marion Cotillard who will play Pattinson’s wife and Paul Giamatti as one of the two men stalking the billionaire. Let’s just slow this down for a second: Robert Pattinson and Marion Cotillard are going to play a married couple? Please.

So why has Farrell bailed? Well, with the actor recently signed on to star in the “Total Recall” reboot that is scheduled to go in front of cameras this spring, roughly around the same time as Cronenberg’s film and we figure the bigger paycheck won out. The current plan is for Pattinson to finish his work on “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” with Bill Condon and move right on over to Cronenberg’s film.

Well, we suppose we’re glad “Cosmopolis” is still getting made but we think the Pattinson casting is totally, totally wrong. But maybe he’ll prove us wrong…..right?

  1. Pattinson is a risky casting choice but it makes me curious what Cronenberg saw in him. I\’ll be checking this movie out for sure. Especially if they are keeping Marion Cotillard.

  2. Jesus, at least wait until Water for Elephants is out before your so quick to judge. Cronenberg obviously wanted him, so why not give the guy a chance hey?

  3. I\’ll give Robert Pattinson the benefit of the doubt. From a business standpoint he made a genius move with the Twilight franchise. He\’s now one of the most famous faces in the world, has a huge fanbase and made millions. He can practically do whatever he wants career wise now. Also a lot of the best leading men actors of the past few years have come out of \”PrettyBoy\” starts- Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc.
Do I still wish Colin Farrell was starring in the film? Oh hells yes. Do I think this is a great move on Pattinson\’s part to be taken seriously as an actor? Yeah, I think it is. Will I be pissed off he ruins the movie? Fuck yes.
Until I see it I\’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Of course just watch, this same principle bit me in the ass when I took a similar \”Wait & See\” approach with Shia LaBeouf\’s casting in WALL STREET 2. It\’s a flawed film for sure but LaBeouf was absolutely bland and horrible in the leading role.
Oh well, at least Cronenberg is making movies!

  4. How is anyone going to believe that Cotillard and Pattinson are married? Easy! Make her out to be leeching, money-loving, power-hungry cougar who latched onto the first pretty-boy, billionaire she could get her claws on.

  5. And you all know you\’re gonna line up to see it anyway, lol. Eh, I\’m willing to give him a chance. He seems like a smart guy and he\’s not taking the easy way here. I\’m sure he could sign on for dozens of mainstream crap films that would keep him working for years. Credit for him wanting to do something challenging and different.

  6. I\’m not sure what\’s funnier: the overboard Robert Pattison hate or the fact that the previous comment used the word \”talkie\” to refer to a motion picture.

  7. I don\’t think Farrell bailed for the paycheck. I think that he committed to Cosmopolis but the start date drifted so then by the time he signed on for Total Recall the schedule to Cronenberg\’s new talkie came up and classed with the latest Len Wiseman opus thus precipitating your man\’s bailing out. I also reckon thats the case with Herr Waltz and A Dangerous Method.

  8. I didn\’t buy Leo with Cotillard in Inception, now they are asking me to buy little boy Pattinson and Cotillard are married? LOL. O.K. good one. Cotillard is too good for this type of crap.

  9. i\’m still hyped, someone like pattinson can\’t win. if he makes \’remember me,\’ he\’s using his power to make shit, if he tries to help out \’cosmopolis,\’ he\’s an asshole. as far as marion cotillard, dudes are married to younger women in just about EVERY SINGLE MOVIE. let the wife be the older one.

  10. It\’s a shame that even after Miami Vice, Cassandra\’s Dream, In Bruges, Triage, and Ondine the movies that TV watchers will know Farrell for are SWAT and Phonebooth. Maybe he\’s still trying to get everyone to forget Alexander.

He probably just owes his agent a favour after having starred in a few movies few saw. Hopefully London Boulevard is another good one.
And even if Total Recall isn\’t great, at least that\’ll mean he\’ll come back to the Euro films.

  11. Rob, I know you\’re reading this, so I just want to say that I am so prettier than all these other wannabe Twihards and you have the prettiest eyes and this movie is going to be super!! wwwoooowooooooohooooo!!!!!!one!!!!

  12. Congrats Rob!

I think you\’ll be great in this and then all the naysayers will see how \”totally totally\” (really, we got it the first time) wrong they were.

  13. And what does Marion Cotillard think about this? It may require more acting skill than playing Edith Piaf. Pattinson + Twilight fanatics = major migraine

  14. How the hell will anyone believe Pattinson and Cotillard are married? Bad casting decision. But Cronenberg is a solid performer so I\’ll check this out for sure.

  15. While I am not enthused by this announcement, Cronenberg has a knack of getting actors to produce some of their best work under him. Hopefully that will be the case here.

  16. Cosmopolis with Farrell: Most anticipated 2012.
Cosmopolis with Pattinson: hey, what\’s that over there in the bushes? Look it\’s two dogs licking their balls. Everyone, come here, check it out!

Great choice, Colin. Len Wiseman over David Cronenberg is a great idea. Looks like someone fell off the wagon.
